Hi everyone.

I'm having some virus issues, and I've been helped tremendously on this board in the past, and I'm hoping its just another simple fix. Windows defender keeps telling me I have to reboot so it can finish removing spyware from my computer, but the message doesn't go away after reboot. But it does show Trojan:Win32/Conhook.I and Trojan:Win32/Vundo.gen!R in its detection listing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My HiJackThis Log shows:

Hello again WBLG123,

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove Viewpoint.

Next

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Alrighty... I appreciate the fast response.

Viewpoint is Removed and DSS was installed & run. Wow, I have a lot of programs that I never touch! If you have any suggestions to get rid of Junk programs, let me know... Thanks!

Hello WBLG123,

Wow, I have a lot of programs that I never touch! If you have any suggestions to get rid of Junk programs, let me know... Thanks!

If you can't find and remove them through Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs then you can open HijackThis, Click on Main Menu > Open Miscellaneous Tools Section > Open Uninstall Manager and follow the instructions. Remember though that when you remove a program it is gone. :)

Now

Right click on Start > Explore > and Navigate to

C:\VundoFix Backups

delete.

As you run Vista you may have to do this as an administrator.

-----Step 2-----

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

Kaspersky Webscanner keeps coming back with a

"Update Process FAILED. No further antivirus actions can be performed" after a 100% database update

and tells me that I have to be online to activate the scanner, even though I am.

Something getting in the way, likely an anti-malware program.

If your AVG is not the problem your Windows Firewall could be the cause.

How to Disable Windows Firewall in Windows XP SP2

1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Off (not recommended), and then click OK.

---------------------------------------------------

You could try the above and see if you have success.

If you have no luck come back and let me know and we will look at alternatives.

Don't forget to let me know how your computer is getting on.

Hmm..

I exited AVG and disabled my windows firewall, but I'm still getting the same result. Other then that, I've stopped getting alerts and Windows defender has stopped asking me to reboot.

Hi WBLG123,

Lets try this one and see if it will work.

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient)
  • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

I'm having some bad luck here...

It won't even give me the option to download the Active X.. it just gives me a blank box with a red X in the corner. I'm having a feeling that they're on the right track because theres no more pop ups or warnings, just my system is lagging just a little bit... but I was wondering if you could recommend any good tools to uninstall programs, besides HiJack This. Here's an updated log file.

Hello again WBLG123,

Try this one. No need to download anything. Should work without a problem. :)

I will talk about the uninstall utility after we have got your machine clean. :)

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.

When you come back please post the Dr Web Cureit report.

Wow, that took some effort :)

I went through the scan partly once and it found and cured a couple trojans, but then my computer froze and I had to reboot, start over, and 10 hours later, finished a new scan.. I don't know if the previous found viruses will be in this file, but it sure did detect a lot of them. Here's the log..

Hello WBLG123,

Looking good. :)

Those ones found were mostly from the tools used and some other false positives. :)

Please download Ccleaner.

Double click and follow the prompts to install.

Before proceeding, ensure that the Advanced Option section is not checked . By default this is the case but have look, just to make sure.

On the left side, click on the button Cleaner, then the buttons Analyze>Run Cleaner

It is not necessary to run the Registry clean option.

Registry cleaners often cause more problems than they cure and really, in almost all situations they are not required. However if you do ever use it, ensure you click "yes" to the back up option, before cleaning.

Note: If you click on The Tools button option you will find an Uninstall Program utility. You were asking about this.

After you have run the Ccleaner come back and tell me how your computer performing now?

Well, i think the virus issues may be solved, but im being faced with another serious issue that I have had before as well.

My computer is randomly freezing at times where I have to manually turn it off by holding down the button. I'm not sure if its software or hardware involved, but it seems that windows will freeze, but I can still move the cursor. I don't think its a power issue, because it happens plugged in with or without battery, and just on battery as well.

I don;t think its hardware becasue I can still move the mouse 95% of the time. just cant click on anything or select a window or perform an action. I cant get a keyboard response as well. Just can move the cursor which will remain an arrow wherever I move it to.

Well, after having my computer freeze 7 times and after 7 reboots, I started it in safe mode and the computer did NOT freeze. I am in normal mode right now, waiting to see if it happens again.

EDIT.. Computer will constantly freeze in normal mode within 10 minutes of starting. Right now, I'm posting in safe mode with networking, and so far I haven't had any issues in safe mode. This leads me to believe that it is a software issues possibly brought on by a virus, rather then a hardware issue. I'm just not sure where to go from here.
