unable to complete installation of Java update

i have windows XP home SP2 (original with all updates except sp3)

IE 7.0.5730.11

java is version 6 update 6

when i tried to update to latest version update - version 6 update 7, i got the following message - 5 times:

"the installation package could not be opened. verify that the package exists and that you can access it. or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

please help.

go to control panel and then Add/Remove programs. Uninstall all versions of Java listed. Then go to http://java.com/ and install the latest version from there. If your still having issues, please let me know.
