I have already gone thru the "you must read this before posting a hijackthis log" and followed all of the instructions, the only thing I did not do was download the XP service pack 3...I'm a bit wary of that one.

iexplore.exe often runs quite high...90+
Also, I have mulitple svchost.exe running and at times have high CPU usage
Plus, System Idle Process and explorer.exe give me fits with high usage

Earlier this week I had a problem with my computer...boot loop...and would not boot in safe mode, etc.
I ended up using my XP cd to get this stupid machine running again...but it's just not running very well.

Help please! Here is my hijackthis log and uninstall list....

Hi there and sorry for the delay - I would like a fresh look at your system

System Idle Process should always be high as this shows how much of your processor is NOT being used

Did you install this Keylogger ? FreeKeyLogger

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

-that was something I installed years ago to check up on my kids...have been unable to purge it from my system.

Here are the logs that you asked for...and BTW, thank you very much for taking the time to help me with this :)

Not a great deal showing so far, but lets clear what I can see

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Free Key Logger] "C:\Program Files\FKL\FreeKeyLogger.exe" minimized
O16 - DPF: {D1F3CBA2-E05A-403E-B7A3-89C30F57D51E} (::: Wild Pockets Plugin MarketTools Control Class) - http://www.wildpocke...etTools9718.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

THEN

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\Program Files\FKL
    Purity
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

FINALLY FOR NOW

Download OTScanit to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All User Accounts
  • Check the Radio buttons for Files/Folders Created Within 90 Days and Files/Folders Modified Within 90 Days
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    • Reg - BotCheck
    • File - Additional Folder Scans
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:

Not a great deal still, so I will go for a secure and tidy up and see how that progresses :)

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

THEN

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP, Vista and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

FINALLY FOR NOW

Download and run Auslogics Disc Defragmenter
This is much better than the windows version

On completion can you let me know of any problems you are still experiencing

OK with a little research it appears that sometimes this problem could be caused by a corrupt index.dat file in your temporary internet files

Lets try and clear it with OTScanit

Start OTScanit. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

[Empty Temp Folders]

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here along with a new Hijackthis log.

I will review the information when it comes back in.

Also let me know of any problems you encountered performing the steps above or any continuing problems you are still having with the computer.

I did as instructed and did not have any problems completing those tasks. When I ran the OTScanIt, it required a restart for completion. Here is that log and a new HJT log. My stupid computer still seems to be poking along...BTW, have I told you lately how much I appreciate you taking the time to help me out??? I SO appreciate it! You're the best!

C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat moved successfully.

Well I think that rules out the index.dat problem

Lets now reduce your non-essential startup items and see if that helps. If you require these programmes to run at start later they can be restored. We are not removing or changing the functionality of these programmes at all :)

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

OK lets take a deep look at your start up to see if anything is hooked to IE

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Hmm that looks OK as well. I will need to do some research on this, so my next reply may not be for a while :)

One possible solution from MS

In Windows Internet Explorer 7, go to the Tools menu, select Phishing Filter, and then click Phishing Filter Settings.
In the dialog box that appears, under Phishing Filter, select Disable Phishing Filter.

Could you let me know how that goes

EDIT there is also a MS KB update here http://www.microsoft...;displaylang=en
