I have been using Firefox as my web browser. I went in a while ago and used Internet Explorer. Went to Kellys Korner and followed your instructions from yesterday, ran the fix, and checked my Control Panel (display). Still cannot access display.

OK lets get a new display cpl and see if that fixes it, there are various ways of doing it and this is the easiest

The file to expand will be on your cd at \i386\desk.cp_
And you need to place it in c:\windows\system32\desk.cpl

Method 1: Use Expand File in Msconfig.exe

To use Expand File in Msconfig.exe, follow these steps:

1. Insert your Windows XP installation disk into your CD drive or DVD drive.
2. Click Start, click Run, type Msconfig, and then click OK.
3. On the General tab, click Expand File.
4. In the File to restore box, type the name of the file you want to expand. Or, to locate the file you want to replace, click Browse File, and then click Open.
5. In the Restore from box, type the path from which to restore the file. Or, to locate the source file you want to expand on your Windows XP installation disk, click Browse From, and then click Open.
6. If the Save file in box is not already populated from step 4, type the path to which you want the file to be restored. Or, to locate the destination folder you want to expand the file into, click Browse To, and then click OK.
7. Click Expand.

After inserting my XP cd, going to start, clicking run, typing msconfig,

in the "File to restore", what do I type in there?

in the "Restore from box" I go to my cd drive, i386\ there is no desk.cp_ file.

When I go to C:\windows\ I don't find "system32?

:) OK lets see if windows can cure the problem via SFC (system file checker)

From the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
Select the OK button.
Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

Rechecked and still cannot access "display" in control panel.

Within the attached zip file are the following : Desk.cp_ and desk.cpl
Unzip both to your desktop and initially copy the desk.cpl to your system32 folder, reboot and see if that cures it

My final shot before I have to pass you over to the software experts.

Does disabling your co2saver enable you to access the properties ?

As for malware you are now clear so I will remove my tools

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

Double click OTMoveIt2 once again and you should see a CleanUp! button, press that button, you may get prompted by your firewall that OTMoveIt2 wants to contact the internet, allow this, a cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will delete all the tools you have downloaded plus itself. Erunt an MBAM are good tools to keep. However, if you wish to remove them it may be done via control panel


Now to get you off to a good start we will re-set your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your your restore point but this is my method:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
2. On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
3. Click NEXT
4. Enter a name e.g. Clean
5. Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
3. Click OK
4. The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
5. Select the More Options Tab.
6. At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
7. Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done
