Hello. I've run at least 5 anti-spyware programs, cleaned and defraged my registry and run anti-virus software. Two pop up windows keep coming up:

1) ad.yieldmanager.com security warning comes up when I'm online, particularly when I'm in e-mail.

2) Error loading c:\windows\system32\ndyfarly.dll The specified module could not be found. Comes up when I log on.

Here is my HijackThis log:

Hi moozles

welcome to geekstogo :)

in this post we will clear the malware i can see and do some scans to see where the rest of the malware is.

the scans will likely take 2 hours, quite possibly much longer. so just let it run.

====STEP 1====
Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    [kill explorer]
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ndyfarly.dll
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\\a8c88155
    EmptyTemp
    purity
    [start explorer]
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

====STEP 2====
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

====STEP 3====
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
====STEP 4====
Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

In your next reply could i see:
1. the OTMoveIT log
2. the kaspersky log
3. the 2 DSS logs (though there may only be one)

The text from these files may exceed the maximum post length for this forum. Hence, you may need to post the information over 2 or more posts.

ok, i can see the other malware now and we will need to run another fix tool, but first we will empty your java cache which has some infections in it:

====STEP 1====
Clearing the Java cache:
there is a nice set of instructions http://www.java.com/.../5000020300.xml

  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Java icon in the control panel and then the Java Control Panel will appear.
  • Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files and the Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
  • Click Delete Files and the Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
  • Make sure all three boxes are ticked: Downloaded Applets, Downloaded Applications and Other Files and then Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window. Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
  • Click OK on Temporary Files Settings window.

====STEP 2====
if you have already downloaded combofix then could you delete the current version of combofix you have and then follow these instructions:

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet. (All the instructions for installing the Recovery Console are in the above link, but for more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.micro...com/kb/314058.)

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

in this post we will clear the rest of the malware i can see and then see how your machine is running. we will also fix your file associations.

i also want to scan 3 programs that i dont recognise, unless you can tell me that they are valid programs:
C:\Program Files\iata62_enu.exe
C:\Program Files\ydropper1_6us.exe
C:\Program Files\PhotoStreamerSetup.exe

====STEP 1====
1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\JkRCffii.ini2

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{fb3d6ece-606a-11db-9372-001111eb62c0}]

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Posted Image

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

====STEP 2====
click on Start, click on Run
copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
This will open up Deckard's File Association Tool
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • Select everything it is displaying there
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Then rescan with DAFT again - it should say now that "All associations are OK"
  • Close DAFT if you receive that message. This means that it is fixed now.
if that does not work then Please download DAFT and save it to your desktop and Double-click the daft.exe icon, and then follow the above instructions from "Click on the Scan button"

====STEP 3====
Jotti File Submission:

Please go to Jotti's malware scan
Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan"box on the top of the page:
C:\Program Files\iata62_enu.exe

Click on the submit button

Please also do the same with the following two files:
C:\Program Files\ydropper1_6us.exe
C:\Program Files\PhotoStreamerSetup.exe

Please post the results of the scan in your next reply.

If Jotti is busy, try the same atVirustotal

====STEP 4====
could you update and rerun malwarebytes and let me know if it finds anything.

In your next reply could i see:
1. the combofix log
2. the new hijackthis log
3. the 3 jotti scans unless you know the programs are valid
4. let me know if malwarebytes found anything
5. some idea of how your machine is running now

The text from these files may exceed the maximum post length for this forum. Hence, you may need to post the information over 2 or more posts.

Hi andrewuk,

You've done it! The machine is running great, and the pop up windows/warnings I originally contacted you about are gone. One interesting thing, though, is that I now have an extra IE shortcut on my desktop. Can I delete it?

-- Malwarebytes found nothing this time.

-- For all three jotti scans, I got the same message:
The file uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file.

-- Here is the updated combofix log:

Hi moozles

congratulations, your logs are clean and another fix is in the can :)

The file uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file.

looks like the combofix script took them out :)

One interesting thing, though, is that I now have an extra IE shortcut on my desktop. Can I delete it?

i would make a new shortcut and delete the two old ones.

in this post we will clear away the fix tools (this is so that should you ever be re-infected, you will download updated versions and it will also remove the quarantined Malware from your computer), reset your restore points (there will be infections lurking in there) and i will leave you with some ideas on how to enhance the protection of your machine against future infection.

====STEP 1====
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
====STEP 2====
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

Instructions with screenshots to help is http://www.f-secure..../sfc_dis1.shtml

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

====IDEAS TO SPEED UP YOUR MACHINE====
this page http://users.telenet...owcomputer.html gives some good ideas on how to improve the efficiency of your machine and has one or two useful links to help your further.

====AND FINALLY====
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Hi andrewuk,

One last set of questions, and then I will leave you to work miracles for others...

-- You mentioned that I should delete the two IE icons on my desktop and create a new shortcut. They are actually different, though. One has an arrow and one doesn't. When I tried to delete the one with the arrow, the message that popped up made it seem as though I'd actually be deleting the program. That seemed odd. When I went to delete the one without the arrow, the message asked if I wanted to delete the "IE icon" and that I could restore it later if I chose. Neither mentioned being a shortcut. Thought I'd better check back with you before doing something stupid.

-- Is there a right way (or maybe a wrong way) to create a shortcut on my desktop? It's been a LONG TIME since I've done it manually.

-- Should I uninstall HijackThis, Malwarebyte or the Windows XP boot disc file?

-- I was going to ask you at the end about suggested software, etc, so thanks for jumping on that for me. I will check out all of the references you provided.

Ok, that should do it. I will await your final nuggets of wisdom. By the way, don't you sleep? :)

right click on both of them and click properties. if one of them is part of the IE program itself (the one without the arrow) then it will open up the window with the tabs General, Security, Privacy, Content, Connections, Programs, Advanced along the top and the General Tab will allow you to give the URL of the Homepage, delete broowsing history, etc. Leave that one alone.

if the other is a shortcut to IE then clicking properties will open a window with tabs General, Shortcut and Compatibility. on the shortcut window beside Target will be "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe". it will have no other address.

sounds as if one may be the IE program itself and the other a shortcut created.......unless one was a shortcut to a malware program we (hopefull) removed......so, make sure you dont delete the program itself. it is perfectly safe to delete the shortcut.

to create a newone, rightclick over the IE program and select "Create a shortcut". of course, if double clicking the one without the arrow launches the internet window, then there is no need to have a shortcut.

-- Should I uninstall HijackThis, Malwarebyte or the Windows XP boot disc file?

you can uninstall Hijackthis and Malwarebytes. do so from the Control Panal ==> Add/Remove Programs. may as well leave the Windows XP boot disc file incase it is ever needed in the future.
