Today I noticed a new icon in my system tray, which turned out to be winspywareprotect. Not knowing what it was or how it got there, I immediately rebooted into my other XP install (I have dual boot to two XP installs on separate partitions) and ran a McAfee (engine 8.5, latest defs). It found nothing. I then rebooted back into the compromised XP install, inserted my Ultimate Boot CD, and ran a-squared free followed by Spybot S&D free. Still finding some process names I did not recognize, I ended up at MS's OneCare service after a Google search. It says it fixed 5 issues including winspyware protect and virtumonde. Just to be sure I was clean, I ran HiJack This. I see some entries I do not recognize. I'd appreciate it if someone could take a look. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to Geeks to Go!

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for installing the recovery console and downloading and running ComboFix:

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that along with a new HijackThis log.

Important notes regarding ComboFix:

ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser. This can easily be changed once we're finished.

ComboFix also prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you, please let me know. This can be undone manually when we're finished.

Note: During this process, it would help a great deal and be very much appreciated if you would refrain from installing any new software or hardware on this machine, unless absolutely necessary, until the clean up process is finished as it makes our job more tedious, with additional new files that may have to be researched, which is very time consuming.

Also, please do not run any security programs or fixes on your own as doing so may compromise what we will be doing. It is important that you wait for instructions.

Did you set the following policies which remove "My Pictures" from the start menu intentionally?

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer]
"NoSMMyPictures"= 1 (0x1)

[HKEY_USERS\.default\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer]
"NoSMMyPictures"= 1 (0x1)

Open Notepad and copy and paste the text in the code box below into it:

Folder::
C:\Temp

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"GEST"=-

Save the file to your desktop and name it CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into the ComboFix.exe as shown in the screenshot below.

Posted Image

This will start ComboFix again. It may ask to reboot. Post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Yes, I did remove "My Pictures" from my Start menu on purpose.

Here are the new ComboFix and HiJackThis logs, but wouldn't it have just been easier to have me delete the GEST key using RegEdit?

Well, Kaspereky identified where the problem came from. I guess I have to have a talk with a certain family member...
I have deleted all the quarantined items in the "G:\T\Stuff\Movies\Vik\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine" folder.
OE (last few items in the log) is no longer used. That data file has not been opened in 6 years. I'm just a packrat.
Here's the Kaspersky log:

You should delete everything in your Outlook Express Inbox and Deleted Items folder.

Also delete these folders/files (be sure Outlook is closed when doing this):

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\Downloads\Shareware games
C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\Downloads\Shareware games.zip
C:\Documents and Settings\Michler\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst

Please post a new HijackThis log.

Do you have Norton anti-virus installed on your G drive? I assume that's a partition?

You should empty the quarantine folder.

The items in HijackThis that show (file missing) really are not in some cases. HJT isn't always able to enumerate files in certain categories of the scan so those should be left.

How are things now?

The G drive is the hard drive from my old pc. It is used only for storage space now. I have deleted the windows installation that used to exist. That copy of Norton you see is left over from when I copied the contents of a friend's hard drive to store his data while he reinstalled windows. Thus, I do not have a working copy of Norton installed. I deleted the contents of Norton's quarentine folder when I saw them listed from the Kaspersky scan.

Everything seems to have been working fine since I used the MS OnceCare service. Posting here was just to check that it didn't miss anything and I thank you for your help. Can we restore the autoplay settings? I thought I could reset it using TweakUI but didn't see it when I just checked. Also, is there any way to get rid of the a-squared files and installed service or is that OT?

It is not advised to enable autoruns as it is a security risk but I am attaching the fix to restore them if you wish.

Save the zipped file to your desktop. Unzip it and double-click the .reg file it contains and allow it to enter into the registry to restore the autoruns.

Have you tried to uninstall ASquared via the Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs?

Removing ASquared is not an option in Add or Remove Programs. I have prevented the service from manual running by changing its default state to manual via the services applet. However, I do not take too kindly to Asquared installing a service just to run a scan and not provide a tool to remove it.
