I have followed the "must do" list up until the Windows update. I need service pack 3, but every time I download it and install it, when my system reboots, I get the safe mode. I try to choose Start Windows Normally, but it won't let me. My only option is to go into safe mode and restore the computer to an earlier date. My system also reboots radomly. I don't know if the Malwarebytes removal may have take care of this, though.

I went to tech-forums.net because I had the virtumonde infection. Unfortunately their suggestions did not clear up the issue, so they recommended that I come here for more help.

Hello again mckryan,

Before we do anything we should start from a sound base.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Please read this post completely, it may make it easier if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later. This will especially help you when your computer is off line. You may want to do this following each post for each set of instructions.
  • It is important you carry out instructions exactly in the order they appear. If however for some reason you cannot carry out one of them, please move on to the next and let me know in the next post what happened.
  • As we will likely be using Notepad please check that word wrap is turned off before you start. To do this, open Notepad, choose Format, then make sure Word Wrap is Un-checked. Word Wrap makes reading your log difficult and may prevent fixes using Notepad from working.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Now lets get down to it.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.

Hello mckryan,

No infected files were found with Vundofix.

In future please post a requested log even if it shows a negative report.

You still have Vundo in your registry and few odd leftover bits. Also you have some adware baddies.

In this post we will uninstall two questionable programs, remove some questionable and downright baddies from your HJT log, delete some bad files, and fix the Vundo problem in your computers registry.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall

* Viewpoint
* Viewpoint Media Player

Next

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FF64059D-4D2A-4D6B-AA0F-2EE4A2FE3856} - (no file)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.amaena.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.avsystemcare.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.iwon.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.onerateld.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.safetydownload.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.trustedantivirus.com

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.safetydownload.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.trustedantivirus.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.virusschlacht.com (HKLM)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

-----Step 2-----

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    [kill explorer]
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\exporrt
    C:\Program Files\WinAntiSpyware 2006 Free
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\K
    purity
    EmptyTemp
    [start explorer]
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

-----Step 3-----

Before we proceed we need to backup your Registry. Making changes to your computers registry is a dangerous proceedure and backup will allow us to recover information if necessary.

Download and install ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) from here lars Hederer or here Snapfiles.com.

Click on ERUNT and follow the prompts to backup your registry to a location of your choosing.

Now we need to address your problems by making a .reg file. Copy the code below into a Notepad file. Name the file as fix.reg, change the "Save as Type" to "All files" and save it on the desktop.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,00,73,00,76,00,31,00,5f,00,30,00,00,00,00,\
00

Then double click on the fix.reg file, when it prompts to merge click "Yes"

The above Registry file was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It should NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause serious damage causing the computer to become unusable.

-----Step 4-----

Next

Run Deckards System Scanner again.

This time there will only be one log.

* Close all other windows before proceeding.
* Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
* When it has finished, dss will open Notepad .txt please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents in your next reply.

So when you come back please post

Since nothing was found, there was no report created. I don't see an option with the software to find a log file.

I'll get started on the other things.

I meant to let you know that I am getting two errors when I reboot - a MS report window for COM Surrogate and a failure window for ehrec.exe. Both have to do with Windows Media Player.

Hello mckryan,

I meant to let you know that I am getting two errors when I reboot - a MS report window for COM Surrogate and a failure window for ehrec.exe. Both have to do with Windows Media Player.

Don't know about this. It might be an issue for the Tech guys once we have your machine clean.

Looking much better on the malware front now.

Lets just run one more scan to make sure before we go to clean up.

Kaspersky only works if you are using Internet Explorer.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.

Click on the Kaspersky Online Scanner button. A box will come up, click Accept, this will allow it to install an ActiveX component and download its latest anti-virus database. (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)

  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    * Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    * Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    * Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hello again mckryan,

A couple of things but mostly stuff quarantined by the tools we have used and infections in the Restore folder which we will be attending to at clean up. :)

By the way, while I was researching your malware problems by chance I ran across this suggested solution for installing Microsoft XP updates. It may not be appropriate for you but here is the link just in case:

http://www.vistahead...html#post867443

Now moving on:
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    [kill explorer]
    C:\Program Files\Online Services\AOL90US\comps\toolbar\toolbr.EXE
    purity

Next

You had Malwarebytes on your machine. If it is still installed please ensure it is updated and run it. When finished post the report it produces back here.

If you nolonger have it installed please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

When you come back please post
  • OTMoveIt2 report
  • Malwarebytes Scan results

Hello again mckryan,

Congratulations your computer looks clean to me. :)

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set. :)

Please up date your Java

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JDK) Update and save it to your desktop or the folder you usually download to.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
Now
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
Next, we need to clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that you are clean here are some things I think are worth having a look at:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then. This helps with security and your computer will run more efficiently. I clean mine once a week. For ease of use, you might consider the following free program which works well with XP:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A great way to check that your Microsoft and Java have the latest updates is to go to Software Inspector at Secunia.

I do this weekly. Not only do they tell you which programs need updating but they give you the link to follow.

To bolster your security go to Secunia.com to ensure essential programs are up to date.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To help protect your computer in the future here are some free programs you can look at:

  • SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users to detect and remove spyware.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

If your Microsoft Update is not working automatically. Keep your operating system up to date by visiting [list]
  • Microsoft Windows Update
monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Hello mcryan,

I overlooked mentioning in my last post that you should update your Adobe. Go to the link below to do this.

Still working on the system restore point, but I wanted to share this message when my FastScan Trojan Remover started to run a scan.

The regfile\shell\open\command Key in the Windows Registery appears to have been modified. The current entry looks like this: regedit.exe "%1"%*

Would you like Trojan Remover to reset this Registery key [recommended]?

I chose No and closed the program so it wouldn't scan. But, the message concerned me, so I wanted to let you know.

I've followed all the steps, so hopefully things are cleaned out. Thank you so much for your help.

I'm still getting the COM Surrogate and ehRec.exe errors when the system boots up. Should I post something in the OS board for XP? I visted the link you gave about installing the SP for XP, but that was for SP2. I am trying to get SP3. Is the OS board the right place to request help for that, too?

I am running ESET NOD32. Can SUPERAntiSpyware and IESpy-Ad run together with ESET?

I worry about running all the different programs like Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, etc. that are recommended in the " How did I get infected in the first place?" message. Won't having all those things running, including ZoneAlarm slow the system down? I know - better to be slow than be infected - right?
