My laptop got infected with malware/trojan and now cannot my desktop is hijacked.
I ran malwarebytes anit-malware and after reboot the "warning" from the desktop is gone. A hijeckthis.log is attached after the reboot. As you see, there are many services/proecesses/registry entries still in there and i need help in eliminating all (or most) viruses/malwares etc that may still lie hidden from my computer.

I could not upload the hijactthis logfile (no permission) so it is attached here.

Hi,

The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read, so in notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap

Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

1) I have copied combofix and xp recovery console onto my desktop. I have disabled antivirus softwares. But when i dragndrop recovery console onto combofix, Mcafee detects pv.cfgexe as trojan and removes it followed by a dialogue box of how i want to open the file (no associaton). I am new to this and would like an expert walkme through this as i do not want my computer render useless (1/100 chance).
2) I also tried to upload the hijackthis log (unwrapped) but i still get no permission. what's up with this? see error. In the interim, I have cut and paste the unwrapped log below.

Hi,

Don't try to upload your log, because that's not what we want (that's why you get the permission denied). You have to copy and paste the logs in your thread.

Also, if McAfee detects parts of Combofix, then this means that you didn't properly disabled McAfee. So please try again.
If McAfee is still interfering with Combofix, then run Combofix from Windows Safe mode or temporary uninstall McAfee (as it may cause issues afterwards as well when running combofix).
You can reinstall McAfee afterwards once we are done with malware removal and your system is clean again.

Sidenote, did you purchase McAfee? No slowdown issues with it? Because on a lot of systems, it causes a huge system slowdown. Also see here: http://miekiemoes.bl...fee-lately.html

Another extra note.. I also see you have Sygate installed here while you actually already have a firewall included in McAfee.
Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

1) thanks miekiemoes!
I thought I had McAfee Firewall turned off - must have restarted recently. Which one do you rate better - Sygate or McAfee's. I somehow (not scientific) thought Sygate's was better but have seen sometimes, it blocks the desired ones as well.

2) Onto the problem at hand. Can u please help me with my original problem. I am afraid to login to websites with my password for fear of being transmitted (if not too late already) and need to access them ASAP.

thanks

The McAfee Firewall was not disabled. Also, disabling a firewall and installing another firewall on top won't make a difference since components of the firewall you have disabled always stay active. That's why we don't recommend to have multiple Firewalls and Antivirus INstalled, since they are not compatible with eachother anyway - disabled or not. A good Security Suite should already display an alert before you install it that you already have a Firewall/Antivirus installed and need to uninstall it.
As for my personal opinion... I never liked McAfee products - but then again, that's my personal opinion.. And for Sygate, it used to be a good Firewall, but not anymore unfortunately.
You can find my fav firewalls and Antivirus in my signature below.

and yes, I'll help you with your original problem.. That's why you need to run Combofix, since Combofix and a script I'll create afterwards for it should solve your main problem. That's why you need to disable McAfee, (since it deletes parts of Combofix and interferes with Combofix), or temporary uninstall McAfee (if disabling McAfee won't make a difference).

1) I uninstalled McAfee. Yes, I do see slowness and/or memory leakage. And, being a comcast user, it comes free. I also uninstalled Adware 2008 and have disconnected Spyware Doctor. Sygate Firewall is disabled. I re-downloaded combofix and Recovery Console onto desktop. Dragndropped onto combofix and the problem got started. no alerts. great! Now, for the hard luck. After it completed ~30 or so stages (can't be sure because it went too fast), my computer just shut off (no power). I powered cycle again and checked for c:/combofix.txt, no file. I suspect it never completed.

What do i do? Please help??? Is it recoverable easily? Do i have to download all the way from the beginning? How do i re-run combofix?

thanks

BTW, I found combofix.txt 1kB in c:\combofix\combofix.txt not in c:\ and appear to be incomplete. See below

Ok, can you try to run Combofix once again? Just doubleclick the Combofix.exe icon to run it.

The original Combofix.txt is located on your C:\ The other one is the one from when you installed the Recovery console.
So after Combofix finished, the log should open automatically. In case your Combofix makes your computer reboot, Combofix will proceed with running after reboot and then create the log.

My computer is turning itself off intermittently. 3 - 4 times by now, started a day or two ago. First, i thought it was because of flaky AC power connector on the back of my laptop but last couple of times, it is fine and battery is 100% charged. I even turned the power settings on the control panel to "never" turn off computer just to see.
Some virus???

How to I continue with disinfection? Please HELP with my original problem and hopefully this new one?

thx

My computer is turning itself off intermittently. 3 - 4 times by now, started a day or two ago

Malware causes a lot of damage - that is known. So it appears that it is worse than we thought if it's acting like this, this already since 2 days. Keep in mind that in such cases a lot of patience will be needed to solve this (in case if the damage is not to big already)

Can you run Combofix in Windows Safe mode?
°To get into the Windows Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times.
Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

The Combofix log is needed because it displays a lot of info that other logs won't show. So we can only tackle the malware if we can see all files causing this.

By the way.. sorry if I won't be able to reply in the next couple of hours. It's already midnight here, so I hope you understand that I can't stay up all night to post instructions..
But I'll reply as soon as possible tomorrow in the morning.

I want to thank you for your help that you have provided me already. I fully understand your situation.
I didn't realize my problem has gotten so worse. I never download anything onto my computer except this very time and got into this mess.
I have disabled the firewall and antivirus. I will rerun combofix in safemode and hopefully will complete the run which i will post it here in next few minutes. If you are awake, fine or else i will have to wait.
