The only thing in Add/Remove that was installed today was Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) MAINSP3 - This update can not be removed.

The last Windows update according to Add/Remove was KB951748 on the 9th July 2008?

Have done a System Restore back to last night, it has now quietened down but only after showing 100% for ages.

Svchost was still hammering the processes.

Have told Windows Update to notify not automatically download and install for future updates.

Download and run process explorer from here http://technet.micro...s/bb896653.aspx this also includes the instructions for running it. When you get to the display shown on the page left click services and then go to file>save as... and save to your desktop. Then post the resulting text file

Hmm not an inordinate amount running there. Next trick, run process explorer again and right click each instance of svchost and select the properties tab. Then select the services tab and note what programe is running under each instance. If it is a programme you recognise then fine, if not post the information that it shows

Must admit a bit gobblygook some of the things that 'Services' says, first one says Dcom is using it?

I have uninstalled AVG - wasn't happy that i had to have everything running or it tries to scare you into thinking you are not properly covered, installed Avast instead which does seem to use less resources, installed that Windows Update again for MS Office, as soon as it had finished Svchost went berserk again, calmed down now so will keep a eye on it and report back if it still takes it ages after booting up regulary.

Nicely done - now that you have removed AVG things should be better. I wonder if the amount of work going on is related to the office update finishing off, as I know with some of my Vista updates they seem to continue loading some 5 minutes or so after reboot.. I will keep this open now for a day or so just in case
