Widesreen monitor

Hi, I've just had to replace my old monitor with a widescreen one - only ones available in my price range. I've adjusted the resolution to 1440 x 900 as per manufactures spec. Problem is everything displayed is stretched. Is there any adjustment I can make so that images etc are shown without distortion? Thanks.
