This laptop was never connected to internet and did not have AV software. I had to travel and use the internet. OK I got several bugs. My first problem was that Internet Explorer was taken over and home page changed. I read posts here and tried to fix the problem. I downloaded Ad aware and Spybot, ran them and tried to eliminate the trojans 7 in all were found. trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c , JAVA_BYTEVER.A , TROJ_AGENT.JA , TROJ_SMALL.X , WORM_SDBOT.CAF , DOS_AGOBOT.GEN. I used AVG to find them and delete them. when I rebooted my machine I no longer have a desktop. Explorer is no longer running. I can boot in safe mode and i tried to launch explorer though DOS and it say access denied. I tried to restore to an earlier date of 22 April and that produced an error. This is the limit of my abilities to restore the system. I ran Hijackthis and here are the results. Thank you for your help.

0x8007043C

Means: ERROR_NOT_SAFEBOOT_SERVICE.
Translation: You need a service which is not available in safe mode - in other words downloading the updates.

Is it a licenced copy of Windows on your lap top?

OK, let's see if we can get you back in in normal mode so that you can get the updates.

With only HijackThis running, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

O2 - BHO: XMLDP Class - {60371670-81B9-4d06-9C42-4DEC1AABE62B} - C:\WINDOWS\xmllib.dll
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0E1230F8-EA50-42A9-983C-D22ABC2EED3B} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SMSSU] C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tmntsrv32] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WindowsFY] c:\wp.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: iexplore - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\02rf0.dll

Click on Config then click on Misc Tools. At the new screen click on the 'Delete a file on reboot' button. You will be presented with a dialog asking you to pick a file. Copy and paste:

c:\wp.exe

into the file name field and press the open button. Hijackthis will prompt you to reboot, click 'No' and click the 'Delete a file on reboot button' again. In the box that appears copy and paste:

C:\wp.bmp

Again you will be prompted to reboot, click 'No' and repeat the sequence for all these files:

C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\xmllib.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\02rf0.dll

After the last file has been entered, when you are prompted to reboot, do so. Rescan with HJT and post a new log here. Let me know if you can access your computer normally.

Please disable Spyware Guard and reboot - leave it disabled until we have finished this - it is interfering.

Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

O2 - BHO: XMLDP Class - {60371670-81B9-4d06-9C42-4DEC1AABE62B} - C:\WINDOWS\xmllib.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SMSSU] C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tmntsrv32] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {DDB38165-2C68-4596-9CD6-B549A03566A9} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll (file missing) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {DDB38165-2C68-4596-9CD6-B549A03566A9} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll (file missing) (HKCU)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: iexplore - 02rf0.dll (file missing)

Click on Config then click on Misc Tools. At the new screen click on the 'Delete a file on reboot' button. You will be presented with a dialog asking you to pick a file. Copy and paste:

C:\WINDOWS\xmllib.dll

into the file name field and press the open button. Hijackthis will prompt you to reboot, click 'No' and click the 'Delete a file on reboot button' again. In the box that appears copy and paste:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE

Again you will be prompted to reboot, click 'No' and repeat the sequence for this:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE

After the last file has been entered, when you are prompted to reboot, do so. Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.

Persistent isn't it. Click here to download cws-dbg.reg and save it to the desktop of the infected machine. When done, double-click the cws-dbg.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Repeat my last post - this reg fix should stop it reinfecting.

OK, just confirm where we are up to. Your last log was from your laptop running in normal mode now? You are able to go online with it now?

Please post a new HJT log when you are patched.

What are the errors AAW and Spybot get?

Try this for me. Click here to download Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta, check for updates and run it. Reboot when done.

Looking better. Let's check nothing is lurking - do this for me. Click here to download eScan's mwav application. Double-click it to run it, select all local drives, scan all files, press 'scan' and when it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane. Highlight it, CTRL C and paste it in your next reply.
