I'm visiting my Grandpa in Cali for the week and he is always trying to get me to clean his computer (he complains it's slow ALL THE TIME, which it is). The computer is a mess to work with and it's so overloaded with protection programs and plug-ins/add-ons that I can barely do what I want to do. I'm flying back home on Wednesday, August 6th, so if anyone could help before then it would be greatly appreciated!

I've managed to run a few anti-virus/spyware/malware programs, such as MalwareBytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, CCleaner. I've tried Ad-Aware but it failed while scanning, every time to run for some reason. Windows update doesn't work properly, his anti-virus programs are a mess and I need some help. I've run HiJackThis and have included the log. I just need to know how badly he has messed up his computer, is it worth it to take the time and try to clean it up, or should we just trash it and by a new one. Any advice would be helpful, thanks for your time!

Hi LTmoney32,

I am sage5, and I will be helping you with this problem.

Major problem seems to be the 2 anti-virus applications running. Yahoo (rebranded Computer Associates/Vet) & Symantec/Nortons
Both, alone, are pretty heavy on resouces, so combined, they are choking the whole system.
Make a choice which one you want to keep, and we'll get rid of all of the other.

Please provide an Uninstall list so we can sort out the tangle.

If you can get the unwanted anti-virus removed, reboot and download the following, saving to the Desktop:
Deckard's System Scanner

Run Deckard's System Scanner:
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double click on the dss.exe file on your Desktop and follow the prompts.
  • Scans will run, and 2 text files will open in Notepad.
  • Close both of the text files.
These files are C:\Deckard\System Scanner\main.txt & extra.txt.
I will need you to copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of
  • main.txt
  • extra.txt
in your next reply.

************

If however you need help untangling the Anti-viruses, create an Uninstall list using HijackThis:
Create an Uninstall list:
  • Open HijackThis, click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save list.
This generates uninstall_list.txt in the same folder as HijackThis. I would need you to paste the text from this file.

Thanks for the quick help! So I just went ahead and uninstalled both of the Anti-Virus programs, I figured they would both use up a lot of resources even alone, and I was hoping that I could grab an Anti-Virus freeware program that was a little lighter on system resources. I set-up Windows Defender also, but I figured I would need an AV program as well. Here are the Deckard logs and I went ahead and included an Uninstall list for fun... Thanks!

Hi LTmoney32,

Please download the following & save to your Desktop:
OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.

The real time protection used by programs like Windows Defender can interfere with malware cleaning procedures.
Please follow the steps below to temporarily disable Windows Defender
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
  • Close Windows Defender
Once your system has been deemed free from malware, you can re-enable Windows Defender's Real Time Protection.

Clean up Registry with a Reg file:
  • Please open a new Notepad file by clicking Start\All Programs\Accessories\Notepad
  • Copy the text from the following Code box, by highlighting all the text and right click, Select Copy. (or use the Ctrl+C keyboard shortcut)
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"PRIVANAL"=-
"DW4"=-
  • Paste it into Notepad. Right click in the window and select Paste. (or use Ctrl+V)
  • Save the file to the Desktop, make sure Type is All Files, and name it Fixreg.reg
  • Double click on the file created and click Yes when asked to merge the information into the Registry

Run HijackThis.
  • Click the Do a system scan only button.
  • Check the boxes for the all the entries listed below:

  • Save the text file as C:\otmove.txt
(If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.)

Your Java is way out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Ugrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Please paste me the text from C:\otmove.txt & a fresh HijackThis log as your next reply.

Cheers,

So I ran across another problem tonight as I got on the computer. For some reason, a past Windows Update that should have installed will not install correctly. Each time it tries to install and fails, displaying the following message:

SLEC.tmp has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the invonvenience.

The update that is trying to be installed is Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366)
After failure, it continually pops up in the system tray saying that it needs to be installed. If this is because the Framework is somehow corrupt, I would love some advice on how to go about repairing or re-installing this update or updates if need be.

Thanks again...

Hi LTmoney32,

We will deal with that Update issue shortly,

Run HijackThis.
  • Click the Do a system scan only button.
  • Check the boxes for the all the entries listed below:
F3 - REG:win.ini: load= C:\PROGRA~1\SIMPLY~1\SIMPLY~1\CASM2ALR.EXE
O23 - Service: VET Message Service (VETMSGNT) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\VetMsg.exe (file missing)

  • Now close all windows other than HijackThis and click Fix Checked.
  • Close HijackThis.

Now we need to get a new Anti-virus & Firewall loaded.
These are essential items and need to be loaded before we can continue fixing your PC.

I have listed a couple of free versions of both. Please download and install 1 Anti-virus and 1 Firewall.

Firewalls: Please install one only.
Comodo Firewall Pro or Sunbelt Personal Firewall

Anti-virus: Please install one only:
Avast! Free Edition or AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic

Anti-Virus Tutorials/Manuals:
Avast Tutorial
Avast Manual
Antivir Manual

Please allow the new Anti-virus to run a full System scan, and at the end of the process you should be able to save a scan log.
If the scan report window does not have a "Save as Report" button (or similar), please highlight the text in the window & copy & paste it to a new Notepad file.
Save it as C:\avscan.txt if you can.

I need you to post me a fresh HijackThis log to confirm correct installation of the Anti-virus and Firewall programs.

Run HijackThis:
  • Select the Run a system scan and save a logfile option. The logfile opens in Notepad.
  • Start your Web Browser and navigate back to this thread.
  • Click the Add Reply button
  • Copy and Paste the text into the Reply window.
  • Also paste me the text from C:\avscan.txt

Cheers,

sage5

Two notes... I quarantined the virus that Avira Antivir found, should I go ahead and delete it? Also, after the HiJackThis scan, I checked and fixed:

O23 - Service: VET Message Service (VETMSGNT) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\VetMsg.exe (file missing)

...however, I scanned again and it is still there. I am also taking off from my Grandpa's house on Wednesday so I would really appreciate if we could get this stuff figured out before then (I could never talk my Grandpa through any of this on the phone :) ). Thanks again for all the help and I look forward to hearing back...

One more quick note. When COMODO Firewall is running, it screws up the internet connection. We are still connected, but I have limited connectivity. When I change the security level from "Custom" to "Allow All," it opens up the network and Internet Explorer can load pages again. Any advice on what to do? Thanks a lot...

Disregard that last question... COMODO Firewall is working fine. I was blocking it myself.

Hi LTmoney32,

We are very nearly done:

That service was one I missed with the previous batch file, back in Post #4

Try this:

Re-run HijackThis & tick these last problem entries.
O16 - DPF: {7F8C8173-AD80-4807-AA75-5672F22B4582} (ICSScanner Class) - http://download.zone...canner37350.cab
O16 - DPF: {BCC0FF27-31D9-4614-A68E-C18E1ADA4389} - http://bin.mcafee.co...,21/mcgdmgr.cab
O19 - User stylesheet: C:\Documents and Settings\William\Recent\My Received Files.lnk (file missing)
O23 - Service: VET Message Service (VETMSGNT) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\VetMsg.exe (file missing)

Click Fix Checked, & close HijackThis

Then without restarting, do the following:

Delete last bad service
Please hgihlight all of the text in the Code box below.
Now, copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following to a new Notepad file.
Save the file, making sure that the Save as type box is set to "All Files", and name it FixServices2.bat Please save it on your desktop.

@echo off
sc stop vetmsgnt
sc delete vetmsgnt
exit

Double click FixServices2.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Shut down & Reboot normally:

Run HijackThis again:
  • Select the Run a system scan and save a logfile button. The logfile will open in Notepad.
  • Start your Web browser and navigate back to this thread.
  • Click the Add Reply button
  • Copy and Paste the text into the Reply window.
Please include a note to tell me how your PC is running now.

Cheers,

sage5

Lastly, some extra or better security for your PC:

The programs recommended below are freeware alternatives to some of your security software & might reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:-

Spyware Prevention:
Spyware Blaster by JavaCool Software, prevents spyware installing and consumes no system resources.
IE/SpyAd, stops suspect sites loading ActiveX, popups etc onto your PC. An excellent tutorial is Here

Spyware Detection:
[url="http://"http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.htm"]Malwarebytes Anti-Malware[/url] is my favourite here.

Anti-Virus:
The first line of defence, especially since some will now detect trojans as well.
Avira's Antivir PersonalEdition Classic and Grisoft's Avast! Free Edition are among the best freebies.
*Please note* You should never install more than one anti-virus program on a PC, as it will cause conflicts.

Firewall:
A Firewall is an essential tool in the security of any PC connected to the Internet.
Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Comodo are both excellent freeware.

Alternate Browsers:
Thankfully, there are now some excellent alternatives to MS Internet Explorer. They offer better security, more stability, and better speed.
A couple of good examples are: Firefox and Opera

Other Updates:
Vital security patches and updates are available for Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer at the Windows Update Site
It is equally important to update the other security software you use, on a regular basis.

Further reading about these issues is available in a very good article: How did I get infected in the first place ? (by Tony Klein and dvk01)

Se if you can describe, in detail, what happens when you try to run Windows Update.

For some reason, a past Windows Update:

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366), was not installed correctly on my Grandpa's computer. I went into his update history to try to find out why it didn't install correctly and Microsoft associated it with this error code:

0xE0434F4D

Also, when I am attempting to install the update, an error screen pops up on the computer displaying this note:

SLEC.tmp has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the invonvenience.

The SLEC.tmp continually changes, today it said SLE104.tmp has encountered a problem. So that value changes every time I try to install. I'm not sure why it is doing this, so any advice would be helpful. Other than that everything is working fine, so if we can't figure this out in a couple days it's not a huge deal. I'm just glad everything is working better than before. Thanks!
