Howdy and welcome to G2G:

First of all, what is the make and model of your computer?

Secondly, what type of XP cd do you have - OEM (Recovery/restore cd that came with your system or a different one, an original Microsoft retail cd or a copy you or someone else downloaded from the net?

Hi Murray and thanks
The PC is a custom build not by me.
The XP is a genuine pro disc

Good.. boot using the XP cd. Once it starts, go to the Recovery Console and type in chkdsk /r and press enter.

Let it do its thing. Remove the cd when it finishes and reboot.
