I have followed some of the instructions that I found on the forums to help irradicate this pest.
I still do not have access to change the desktop tab in display properties. I am assuming that I have not completely removed the malware.

Below is a log from HiJackThis after my corrections. I did use Combofix and will post that log as well.

Hi there,

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Then,

  • Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "Suspicious files to scan"box on the top of the page:

    • C:\WINDOWS\hpdj3740.hi2
  • Click on the Upload button
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

Please do the same for:
C:\WINDOWS\hpdj3740.bu2

Next,

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Post back with the logs and a new Hijack This log please, how is your PC running?

Hi there :)

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts. A log will appear (JavaRa.log), please post the contents of this log on the forum.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
Go ahead with the rest of the instructions then.

I was able to uninstall Java and then install the latest version.

Issue...... When I try to use the virscan.org, the system freezes (stops doing anything) at the analyzing process. I allowed the scanner to run for over 10 minutes with no response.

This computer (this computer is not mine but an employee's desktop) does have an HP Deskjet 3740 printer connected to it.

I did not know whether or not to continue with the malwarebyte's portion of the diagnosis.

The computer seems to be running ok with the exception that the display properties window is still missing the "desktop" tab. See the attached bitmap

Hi there :)

Fix these lines in Hijack This please.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [My Web Search Bar] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\MWSBAR.DLL,S
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_06) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_01) -

It also seems that older versions of Java are still installed, please make sure the only Java in add or remove programs Is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.

You seem to be missing the screensaver tab as well, let me gather some information first.

Open notepad by going to START > RUN and type notepad.exe in the box that appears. In the window that pops up please copy and paste the following

@ECHO off
reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System"> looksee.txt
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System">> looksee.txt
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer">> looksee.txt
reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer">> looksee.txt
start notepad looksee.txt
del %0

In Notepad click on the "File" menu > Save As... Under "File name" type fix.bat and Change "Save as type" to All Files, save it to a place you will remember.

Posted Image

Double click on fix.bat. Looksee.txt will appear, please post the contents of that file.

I want to get an online scan in as well, you can post the results of the batch file first so we can work on that while the scan runs.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Good please do the following.

Click on Start then Run
Copy and paste the following line:
REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" /V ClassicShell /T REG_DWORD /F /D 0
Click OK.

Then return to RUN
Copy and paste the following line:
REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" /V NoDispScrSavPage /T REG_DWORD /F /D 0
Click OK.

Reboot, check in properties and tell me if the tabs are there. Post back with the kaspersky log when that is done too.

Now please download OTCleanIt.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double Click on OTCleanIt.exe, a window will appear.
  • Please press the CleanUp! Button.
This will remove the tools we used during the process of cleaning your computer.

MBAM needs to be uninstalled manually through add or remove programs.

Now that your are clean, you'll want to stay that way.

Some important things that you should keep in mind in order to protect yourself:
  • Use common sense. This is the big one! Don't download programs from suspicious sites and be careful where you browse.
Things you can do to avoid downloading bad programs:
    • Google the program. Read reviews and opinions from other people on the internet, if you dont see any reports of foul play - then there more than likely is none.
    • Stay away from Cracks! However luring the thought of free software can be it's not worth the hassle and potential danger of getting infected.
    • Download the program directly from the website of the developer - then you can be certain you haven't downloaded a bogus copy.
    • Read the EULA (End User License Agreement) - Find out exactly what you are downloading. A good tool to aid you in this would be EULAyzer.
  • Keep your programs updated! Software developers update their programs to patch possible security risks. Do a scan once in a while for outdated programs using Secunia's Software Inspector
  • Keep your protection programs up to date! No matter how good your Antivirus or Antispyware program is, without an updated set of definitions it will do you no good against the new infections. If you run a free program make sure to update them at least once a week.
  • Make sure that windows updates is enabled. Keeping your system up to date is a must - to turn on automatic updates take a look at this article by Microsoft.
I have listed two programs to boost your security while using no resources.
  • SpywareBlaster Take a look at the tutorial here.
  • ZonedOut Adds thousands of websites to your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Also consider using an alternative web browser. Two big named ones, both far superior to Internet Explorer in terms of security and performance, would be Firefox and Opera.

Make a habit of scanning your computer for viruses every week or so and backing up important files regularly.

Please also read Expert Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Please post back and tell me if everything is OK, so that I may mark this thread as Resolved.
