Hello,

My laptop seems to be running slow. Im running windows XP

sometimes it seems to freeze. and videos on the likes of youtube seem to often run slow or stop in intervals.

My discspace was getting full , but I deleted 2 gigs worth recently. so I now have some free space.

I have used Two antivirus checks in search of malware / spyware on a few recent occasions.

one was AVG from my laptop, the other house kernal trend micro an online service that I have used in the past and its Usually found and rectified any previous problems that I have had.

It found some spyware and a couple of viruses etc that It removed.. But It warned that
upon deleting them that it may alter or upset certain files. and could cause problems..

I suspect that this has happened as some of my software files seem to be corrupted.

I have one problem with what I think is spyware that I cannot seem to remove.

Its a advert that shows up on Yahoos page, Its from a company calling itself planet 49.

I suspect that its a permanent fixture.. I tried to search google on how to remove it but I could find very litte about it.

Ive uploaded a copy of the advert [ attachment=22482:planet49.GIF]

I wonder if anyone could advise me.

I will post a hijack this file if that will help.

Many thanks in advance

Hello dowsp,

Couple of things.

Are you running McAfee Anti-Virus as well as AVG? It's OK to run one anti-virus and one firewall but running two real time anti-virus programs will cause conflict and result in little or no protection?

If you do have both running please uninstall one. Note: In my experience AVG uses less resources than McAfee. This may be important in your situation.

Download the McAffee removal tool from here and save the file to your desktop.

Close all McAfee Application windows you may have open, and double-click on MCPR.exe to start the removal tool.

Note: Windows Vista users will have to right-click on the file and select "Run as Administrator"

After the removal tool finishes, restart your computer.

After the removal tool finishes, you should be prompted to restart your computer.

Once the computer restarts, your McAfee product should be uninstalled.

Next

Hopefully this will deal with the Yahoo bar you complained of.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/......./

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

-----Step 2-----

Please up date your Java

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JDK) Update and save it to your desktop or the folder you usually download to.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
-----Step 3-----

Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date. Older versions are vunerable to attack.

Please go to the link below to update.

http://www.adobe.com.../readstep2.html

-----Step 4-----

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

So when you come back please post
  • Malwarebytes scan results
  • and a new HijackThis log
