Hi there,

I've had the Vundo / Virtumonde virus for about 3 weeks now and have followed numerous solutions to no avail - Vundofix, Virtumonde and SpyBot - in normal and safe mode.

Today I ran the Malwarebytes scan and removed the infected entries. Upon re-boot I see that there is still an infected file, and when browsing the web I do not get the pop-up ads any more, but I am unable to log in to any web page! Including this one, this is being posted on a colleagues machine!

Here is the HT log:

Hi Steve,

Welcome to Geeks to Go!

My name is Stamper19 and I will be helping you with your Malware problem. During the course of our interactions please be sure to follow all instructions carefully, and ask questions if you are unsure of how to proceed at any point. :)

----------------------------------------------------------------

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

----------------------------------------------------------------

Information to include in your next post:
  • Combofix Log

Hey Stamper19, great to have your assistance.

I ran combofix as instructed, but several times during the process Windows prompted that it cannot run "pv.cfexe" as it cannot identify the program that should be used.

I hit cancel each time and it took me to the combofix command prompt screen, and showed that it is scanning for infected files.

It has been that way for 30 mins now, and I'm not convinced it is working - as it tells me it should take no more than 10 mins.

Any ideas?

Hey Steve,

Happy to help out :)

Lets hold up on the combofix for now and do the following:

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on DSS.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • The scan may take a minute. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - Main.txt and Extra.txt

Extra Note: When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so. Also, it may happen that your Antivirus flags DSS as suspicious. Please allow the Deckard's System Scanner to run and don't let your Antivirus delete it. (In this case, it may be better to temporary disable your Antivirus)

Post the main.txt and extra.txt from the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder into your next reply.

Hey Stamper,

Here's a funny thing. I quit the combofix program after about 40 mins of it running as I thought it had frozen, and re-booted my pc.

On re-boot, I opened IE7...and no pop-ups, no log-in problems, my pc was running smoothly!

I'm not getting too carried away though. My Trend Micro real time monitor still picks up a trace of Vundo, as does MBAM.

Also, one large application (After Effects 6.5) fails to open.

What action should I take now? Should I give you some logs?

Your initial logs show infections in addition to vundo, so you are not in the clear yet. Go ahead and post the logs as directed in my previous post and we will take it from there.

Hey Steve,

Extra.txt seems to have gotten cut off. Can you please repost that log in your next reply in addition to the following?

You have both McAfee Antivirus and Trendmicro AntiVirus installed on your PC.

Running two, or more, anti-virus programs in real time can cause conflicts resulting in less, not more, protection, Unless you have, or can, configure one to work only "on-demand", you will need to choose your favourite and uninstall the other.

We need to fix some file associations

Please go to Start > Run. In the box that appears, carefully copy and paste the following:

"%Userprofile%\Desktop\dss.exe" /daft

Accept the disclaimer, and click the "Scan" button. Place a checkmark next to everything that appears and press "Fix". Afterwards, close the window.

Now, try running combofix again and lets see if we can get anywhere.

Hey Stamper.

When I first got the problem I was urged to install Trend Micro. It prompted me to uninstall McAfee, which I attempted to do, but the uninstall wasn't a particularly clean one, possibly due to the virus problems I had.

Now, it doesn't appear in my Add/Remove Programs list, so I'm not sure how I can rid it completely from my system.

Any ideas?

Regarding combofix, I've read previously that it is a high-risk operation, and should only be used as a last resort as I risk losing my data. Considering it froze last time, I'm a little concerned.

You've obviously got way more experience than me in these matters, however. What are your thoughts?

When I first got the problem I was urged to install Trend Micro. It prompted me to uninstall McAfee, which I attempted to do, but the uninstall wasn't a particularly clean one, possibly due to the virus problems I had.

Now, it doesn't appear in my Add/Remove Programs list, so I'm not sure how I can rid it completely from my system.

Any ideas?

Certain AV programs tend to be difficult to uninstall, and McAfee is one of them. We will get this cleaned up later -- it is enough for now to know that it has been somewhat uninstalled.

Regarding combofix, I've read previously that it is a high-risk operation, and should only be used as a last resort as I risk losing my data. Considering it froze last time, I'm a little concerned.

You've obviously got way more experience than me in these matters, however. What are your thoughts?

Data should always be backed up, as there is risk associated with every tool that we use, all be it minimal risk. Remember that data can also be lost for reasons completely unrelated to malware. Combofix is an extremely powerful tool, however many individuals who are not members of the malware removal community tend to ignore that and attempt to use combofix on their own. The warnings you are seeing are intended to discourage these folks, as combofix should only be used by people who have been trained to do so. Every staff member here has gone through extensive training in using all tools, and has access to resources (in the unlikely event that something was to go wrong) that the typical home user does not. So, while I cannot tell you there is no risk, I will tell you that in my opinion the risk is minimal, and the combofix is one of the most commonly used tools here, so we have a lot of experience with it.

Hey stamper,

I just followed the instructions to fix the file associations, and fixed the 4 entries.

I then ran combofix, and it prompted the same error again with "pv.cfexe". I hit cancel (to search for the program associated for this file).

The blue combofix box then appeared, but with no text, and stayed that way for 15 minutes so I exited the program.

Any ideas on what next?

Ok - lets go a different direction.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

That is good news, and not unexpected :)

Lets delete some ill mannered files.

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Purity
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
