I have another thread here for my laptop, this is the log for my desktop. AVG 8.0 keeps finding adware.Dr.Antispy, two adware.generic files, and lots of tracking cookies including ad.yieldmanager, adopt.euroclick, and lots more. Originally it was coming up with trojan.generic11, but the last few scans have not found that. The Malwarebytes log is now showing clean. Here is the hijackthis log:

Hi Liz,

Please download Runscanner to your desktop and run it.
  • When the first page comes up select Beginner Mode
  • On the next page select Save a binary .Run file (Recommended) then click Start full scan at the top.
  • At this time Runscanner.exe may request access to the Internet through your firewall please allow it to do so, it will then run for two or three minutes.
  • On completion it will ask for a location to save the file and a name. It will do this for both the .run file and the log file
  • Call the .run file "Select a name" and save it to your desktop. You will see the .run file on your desktop. Upload that file here.

Hi emeraldnzl,

I'm glad to hear from you again.

I discovered the other night that I am having trouble deleting the old Java updates on this computer (as you instructed me to do on the laptop). It gives me an error box "Fatal error during installation", when trying to uninstall.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Lizard1107,

Download the attachment at the end of this post (this will be your runscanner file fixed by me)

  • Save it to your desktop then double click the runscanner icon this will run the program.
  • You will notice several entries in red and in blue.
  • Click the button at the top called Fix selected items
  • Accept the warning(s) and repeat until they are all gone.
  • Reboot your PC
Next

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hello again Liz,

Bit to do in this post.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

-----Step 2-----

Please download DAFT and save it to your desktop:
  • Double-click the daft.exe icon.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • Select everything it is displaying there
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Then rescan with DAFT again - it should say now that "All associations are OK"
  • Close DAFT if you receive that message. This means that it is fixed now.
-----Step 3-----

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    [kill explorer]
    C:\FOUND.010
    C:\FOUND.009
    purity
    EmptyTemp
    [start explorer]
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

-----Step 4-----

After that, please download JavaRa and unzip it to your Desktop.

Double click JavaRa.exe then click Remove Older Versions.

Follow any prompts; a log will popup (JavaRa.log)-- please post the contents of this log.

Next, open JavaRa.exe again, and select Search For Updates.

Select Update Using Sun Java's Website --> Search, and continue the instructions for downloading and installing the latest Java version.

Lastly

This is a new link for Kaspersky.

Kaspersky only works if you are using Internet Explorer.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.

Click on the Kaspersky Online Scanner button. A box will come up, click Accept, this will allow it to install an ActiveX component and download its latest anti-virus database. (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)

  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    * Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    * Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    * Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

When you come back please post
  • OtMoveIt2 report
  • JavaRa log
  • Kaspersky scan results

I believe the Kaspersky website is down at the moment so I will have to try that scan again in a bit. In the meantime, here are the other logs you requested:

Things seem to be proceeding according to "Hoyle".

Look forward to seeing the Kaspersky scan when you get it.

Hi emeraldnzl,

Since the last scan looked similar to the kaspersky scan results from my laptop, I went ahead and followed your directions from that thread. I ran OTCleanit and cleaned my restore points. How did I do?

I have seen noticable improvement in the speed on this computer. I really appreciate your help.

Thank you,
Liz

Hi Liz,

Well you know the ropes by now and have done what I would have recommended. :)

I was just waiting for a final check from my moderator who lives on the other side of the world from me.

Sound asleep at this moment I suspect.

I will still check in with him but I think he will confirm what you have done.

best regards

Hello Liz,

Yep your clean now. Just to make sure you haven't missed anything here are the steps that needed to be taken. :)

Please go here to download OTCleanIt.

Run this program to remove the tools we have been using.

You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process choose Yes.

Next, we need to clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

I guess much of the following was in the last thread we helped you with last time Liz.

In any event just to make sure we cover everything here is a shortened version.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that you are clean here are some things I think are worth having a look at:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is excellant; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up blocker (Note: this as an added benefit!) that I have seen. Firefox is my default browser but I retain Internet Explorer as well so that I can access the very few sites that require it.

Firefox may be downloaded from Here

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To help protect your computer in the future here are some free programs you can look at:

  • SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users to detect and remove spyware.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

If your Microsoft Update is not working automatically. Keep your operating system up to date by visiting
  • Microsoft Windows Update
monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
