Hi again essexboy. AVG says infection Trojan Horse Clicker.pfp C:\SystemVolumeInformation\_restore{3A579F61-82CF-4117-919A-DB7B394CD5BC}\RP41Z\A0048066.SYS

AVG is also now telling me it can't update because it is missing a .bin file. Don't know if that means anything to you, but thought it might.

Downloaded DSS and when I double click, it only gives me the main.txt tried it twice and done the same thing. Here it is:

Hi it is finding it in system restore, which generally means it is impotent. And I also believe it is a heuristic detection which means it is showing the characteristics. So first I will flush your restore points. As for the missing .bin file I would recommend a re-instal of AVG to see if it cures that problem

  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

NEXT

Just to be sure I am correct in seeing nothing

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Update on the AVG problem from their website

Currently the update for AVG Free v8 is corrupted... you will have to wait for AVG Technologies to address the issue with the update.

Reporting the issue again by other users here will not do any good util it is resolved.

The updates that your AVG currently have will still provide the protection it is setup to detect. In otherwords, not being able to get this update will not make your AVG Free ineffective and as soon as AVG Tech resolves the issue you will be able to update to the current virus definitions at that time.

So in short... please do not post to report the issue, its already known. Also please be patient until AVG Technologies can address the issue.

Also... for those user that did report the issue... thanks for the info.

Thanks for the AVG info. Can I ask you a question? Is there another free anti-virus you would recommend? Ever since I put the AVG 8 insted of 7.5 on my computers, I can no longer access my online credit card site. I called the credit card co and they walked me through alot of steps that did not work. They told me to call microsoft and microsoft told me it was a firewall blocking me from getting in. I can go to a friends house (who does not have avg8) and it will access without any problems. So I know it is the AVG. It is on all 3 of my computers and I can not access the site on any of them. I thought maybe there is another free anti-virus that is just as good.

Here is the scan. It did say it did not find anything.

I must admit I am a bit disillusioned with the latest version of AVG as it seems to have a lot of false positives and update problems, plus it tends to slow the system down.

I will not give my clean spiel as you have allready had one and seem to be following it :)

I use Avast, I can give you the installation instructions for that and at the end another free AV if you do not like Avast. If you do not like the GUI of Avast (media player ) then there are other skins that you can download from here I use the Black Vibe myself but Pirate is fun

Please go HERE and download avast! 4 Home Edition to your desktop.

Go offline and uninstall AVG via add/remove programmes within control panel

Reboot

Then locate the file that you just downloaded, double-click on the file to launch the installation of avast! (asweng.exe)

Click Next on the avast! Setup window and on the next window with the ReadMe File.
Now you will see the Legal Agreement, just click I agree, and then click Next to continue.

You will be prompted with Configuration window, make sure that you choose Typical configuration and then click Next. Click Next to the windows that will follow, when the installation will finish, you will be given an option to schedule a boot time scan, select No

Now you have to restart your machine, select Restart and then click Finish.

After you restart you will get a message about avast! it will give you the general "Hello and Thank you for choosing our Product." Also after you restart you will notice 2 new icons in the bottom right corner of the screen.

VERY IMPORTANT - after restarting, right click on the a in the taskbar and select Updating, then highlight and click Program.

You will get popup after its done updating. If avast! had to download anything for your computer you may get a message asking you to restart.

After you have updated avast! right click the small icon a in task bar and click Start Avast! AntiVirus

Click Program Registration and you will be taken to their website. Fill out the form and then check your e-mail. Once you get an e-mail from them (usually about 1 minute after submitting the form) copy and paste the serial they provided into the highlighted box. Then click ok.

This section is optional as you have no infections

After this, you will need to Schedule Boot-Time Scan with avast! Click on the little button placed up in the left corner, and select Schedule Boot-Time Scan. Read also this tutorial HERE it may make it easier to you to follow the steps.

Next, choose
  • Scan all local disks
  • scan archive files
  • click on Schedule
On the next dialog Operating system restart needed select Yes
Now avast! will restart your computer and start to scan before Windows fully loads.

IMPORTANT NOTE since your system has infections on it, avast! will give you dialog box with recommended actions, and options, please make sure if this happens, to click the Move to Chest button, and not to delete any reported files.

Extra AV if you do not like Avast the there is AVIRA Instructions for use are here

Any questions just shout :)

Thank you so much. I will definately give Avast a try.

And by the way, AVG updated correctly today so I guess they fixed their issue with the .bin

:) By the way you are GREAT. Thanks for helping me.

My pleasure - Shall I call this resolved, or shall I wait untill the new AV is installed ?

Essexboy, I have the Avast downloaded. Here is what it found and I moved to the chest:

C:\windows\system32\cerwxfst.sys infection trojan-gen{other}
C:\windows\system32\mtsycod.sys infection trojan-gen{other}
C:\windows\system32\tmpo_401061298117.bk.old infection win32:DNSChanger-VT[Trj]
C:\windows\system32\xwxfst.sys infection rootkit-gen[Rtk]

Does that look right to you?

Thats why I like Avast. I assume this was done on a boot scan. Those are new infections that were only recognised within the last week or so

Glad I kept this open

I would like another DSS scan this time with both reports. Below are the instructions for getting them

click on Start, click on Run
copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
This will open up DSS configuration
click on Check All
click Scan
DSS will now run again when finished
Please post back both logs that open in notepad

I'm glad you left it open to, thanks. Was I supposed to move those to the chest, because I did?

Was I supposed to move those to the chest, because I did?

Definitely :) It looks as though AVG let those through.. It might be worth checking your other systems just in case.

Now it looks OK are you experiencing any problems at all ?

Everthing seems to be OK. When you say I should check other systems, what should I check? My other computers?
Question about Avast, does it scan on it's own daily or do I need to run a scan myself? Also when it finds something, should I always move it to the chest?

Sorry yes

The scheduled scan is only avalable in the professional version. However, you can set it to scan as your screensaver. I do a scan once a month as the screensaver scan normally does the job, it picks up where it left off last time

Also when it finds something, should I always move it to the chest?

Yes as it is safe there and if it turns out to be a false positive you can restore it
