You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
    Run AboutBuster
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
    • Install ewido security suite
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update

I am at the ewido virus scanner step.
I dr watson at 98% finished.
I ran the scan twice and it stopped in the same place.
Both with Dr. Watson
It looks like it is scanning files in windows backup the file name has Restore in the name.
I have Norton anti-virus installed on the PC but disabled.

The about buster (which I had done before) fond several things in Safe-mode, and cleaned em out.

Should I generate a hijack log of what I have now?

A couple of questions....Is my service Pack II upgrade corrupted since I upgraded when I had malware on my PC?
Will I need to run some sort of System restore?

Thanks

Almost there!!

Reboot into Safe Mode, and open HJT. Scan for a log and check the following entries only:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2938F76F-DE0A-0598-C19A-601514AA2F5D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipph32.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: YBIOCtrl Class - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BDAD1DAD-C946-4A17-ADC1-64B5B4FF55D0} - (no file)
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\ieij32.exe (file missing)

CLick "fix selected" then reboot normally and post a last HJT log here for me to review. Also let me know how things are running now!

And no, you shouldn't have to do a restore. Let's see how everything looks and is running! :tazz:

Since you're having that problem, would you please give me what's called a Silent Runners log? I want to make sure there's not something trying to hide from me!

*Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Go to start, run type "services.msc" with out the quotes find the service.

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper

Right click and stop it, make the start up type to disabled. When you have done that go into Hijackthis > open the misc tools section > delete an NT service and delete 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I. Then post a new Hijackthis log here in a reply.

I couldn't delete it with the Hijack tools. I did disable it in Services.

I don't see it in the log any more...

I have been trying to keep family OFF the PC until This little problem has been resolved. I haven't been able to get to the PC to play. I did notice that My Computer Icon works again. My guess is that I'm back in business... I won't get to the PC for a couple more days. If it's OK to leave this open, we can do that. If not, I can open a new "problem report" later...

I am a computer professional, and know my way around a PC... This little fiasco, has infuriated me to a point I am seriously considering "joining the fight" and becoming a member of the geek team.

I will search the site for more info on this.
I would also like some info on "how did this happen" and prevention...

As I said before, if you choose to close this, and I have other problems I can open a new log.

This is an awesome site. I sincerely thank you for your help.

You are welcome! I will leave this open for a couple of days. Post here and let me know when you're ready for me to close it!

Please DO consider joining GeekU! As you have seen, this is a horrible problem, and we'll take all the help we can get in winning the fight! To sign up, make a post here.

Congratulations! Your log is now clean! :tazz:
Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
