Hey guys,

Friend of mine had a question about graphic cards.

I'm trying to decide which graphics card to buy. I have to choose between a
8800GT 512mb GDDR3 600/900 clock
or a
ATI Radeon HD3870 800/2250 GDDR4

Let me know what you think

Hope you can help :)

Regards,
Olrik

The 8800GT has much better performance than the HD3870. If your friend will be gaming at all, the 8800GT is a much better choice. The 8800GT is also better at playing back most HD video formats. For more typical usage, such as non-HD media playback, internet browsing, etc., both are more than suitable.

Thanks for the advice Stettybet0 :)
Out of interest, Do you know why the 8800GT performs better then the HD3870?
The HD3870 has higher clock rates.

EDIT: Would the Asus EN8800GT,512MB, GDDR3, PCI Express x16 be the right choice? :)

Olrik

I personally would go with EVGA or XFX due to their lifetime warranties, but since they are both US-based companies, their prices may be much higher in The Netherlands due to import costs. If this is the case, then the ASUS one will do fine. They are all more or less the same, other than the warranty policy, customer service, etc.

As for why the 8800GT outperforms the HD3870 despite the HD3870 having higher clocks... I wrote something similar in this post comparing a higher clocked Pentium 4 to a lower clocked Core 2 Duo. The concept is pretty much the same. The 8800GT has a superior microarchitecture when compared to the HD3870.

Yea, The ASUS is a lot easier to get by here in The Netherlands :)
Thank you stettybet0 for the assistance :)
