I'm trying to help a friend with her computer that's swarming with malware and trojans. I've run ad-aware and spybot several times and realize I need to tackle this from anotehr angle.

A problem: Whenever I open up IE, a pop-up appears announcing my computer has been infected with malicious software and asks that I click OK to resolve the problem. When I click CANCEL, it opens up the C:\ drive and prompts me to download a file from a website (something like getiedefender.com). I know this computer is infected with at least one trojan and have been attempting to resolve the problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to GTG.

Please print the below instructions or copy them to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the order mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

Download Malwarebytes ' Anti-Malware at http://www.besttechi.../mbam-setup.exe or http://www.majorgeek...ware_d5756.html Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full Scan, then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart (see Extra Note below).
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy & paste the entire report into your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Go to http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix and follow the instructions on how to install the Recovery Console and run ComboFix. Go through all the steps until posting the log part. Post the combofix log here.

Open up your Notepad editor (Start->Run, type in notepad and click OK). Copy the text from the quotebox below into Notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\imsins.BAK
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb41.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb1942.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb2128.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb4827.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb8467.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb6334.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb5436.dat

Save this as CFScript.txt in the same location as the ComboFix.exe tool.
Drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Follow the prompts. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not click on combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

How is the computer running so far?

The computer is working better. I was prompted at one start-up that I had two New Win32 viruses and an EICAR test file issues. Not sure those are related to the trojans. Other than that, I have not seen the previous pop-up stated related to the C: drive malware.

Did it mention exactly what infection it found?

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

* Click on 'Scan your PC' button. There should be a popup - if you have a pop-up blocker, make sure it's not blocking it.
* Click 'Check Now' & a pop-up window will appear.
* Enter your Country, State and E-mail Address & click 'Scan Now' - begin downloading Panda's ActiveX controls (8 MB size).
* Begin the scan by selecting My Computer.
* If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Ignore any entry it finds (since it wants you to buy the program for removal) as we will address this later.
* Click on see report. Then click Save report.
* Post that log in your next reply.

Delete the following:

D:\My Documents\My Received Files\id93jr893.exe
D:\My Documents\DRIVERS\norton\norton antivirus 2005 (cd key vjcj r394 gbcf xcxx r34p bcyp)\Norton Antivirus 2005 keygen.exe
D:\My Documents\DRIVERS\norton\Norton Antivirus 2005 keygen.exe

Go into Firefox->Tools->Clear Private Data and hit OK to delete all your cookie and temp files.

Good job. Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If none, go to Start->Run, copy/paste in combofix /u and hit OK to remove it. You should be set to go.
