I've been getting a few random errors on my computer lately, i suspected something and tried to start kapersky anti virus, but it wont start. Every time i click the icon, nothing happens, so I'm not sure if I am infected or not.

Hi there and sorry for the delay

Could it be because you have Avast on your system. Some Antiviruses will refuse to start if there is another one resident

Lets have a deeper look

Download OTScanit to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All User Accounts
  • Check the Radio buttons for Files/Folders Created Within 90 Days and Files/Folders Modified Within 90 Days
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    • Reg - BotCheck
    • File - Additional Folder Scans
    • File - Purity Scan
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

Hi again,

Just a few things since I posted.

For some reason kapersky isn't listed under the installed programs list in "Add or remove programs", however i have the files on my computer, it used to be there and now its gone..? I still can't get it to start anyway, so i just deleted the files off my computer and downloaded AVG instead.
Secondly, avast is not installed on my computer, it was an antivirus i had last year i believe, till i got kapersky. It is listed under the add and remove programs list, but when i try to uninstall it, it gives me an error.

In regards to OTscanit

I downloaded the file and extracted it to my desktop, however, when i try to run otscanit.exe, I get this error:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"

Unsure on what to do now.

Thanks :)

OK to totally remove Avast download and run aswclear from here

Kaspersky removal tool here

Could you run those two and then post a new Hijackthis log with the problems you are now experiencing

Solution found.. It is AVG blocking the programme. To run it you will need to disable AVG for the duration of the scan

OK I will use a different tool then

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Aye I know one of our more usefull tools is being targeted...

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet. It is imperative that you install this as it will enable a system recovery in the event of problems

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Just as a side note, i keep getting warning from AVG for some reason about a possible infection.
It happens randomly, unsure if it is a false threat.

Thanks

Since AVG moved to Heuristics they seem to be getting more than their fair share of false positives

Lets now sweep the registry for orphans

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Logs required : Just MBAM and how is your computer running now ?

That is in your system restore which we will now proceed to clear :) It is generally harmless in there

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

A good workman allways cleans up after himself so...Download and run this small programme and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself

Now to get you off to a good start we will clean your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your restore points, but this is my method:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free program: It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?
Keep safe :)
