I have followed steps 1 through 5 and removed the Antivirus 2008 stuff. However, there are still some oddities that are left on the system. Can anything more be done?

Icons do not show in the system tray, but the processes are loaded & running.

The 2 Front USB Ports stopped working when the virus appeared, and have not been working since.

The 'Start> Programs list does not show everything that use to be there

Cannot get into the external 500 GB Back Up Drive software (Retrospect). It just hangs.

System is running very slow.

I have run HiJackThis and have the log available. What should I do next?

Thanks so much for your help!

Hello again rosemary1177,

Welcome to Geekstogo.

Not much at first sight.

In this post we will attend to an out of date utility and run a program to have a better look at what might be causing your problems.

Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date. Older versions are vunerable to attack.

Please go to the link below to update.

http://www.adobe.com.../readstep2.html

Next

Please download Runscanner to your desktop and run it.
  • When the first page comes up select Beginner Mode
  • On the next page select Save a binary .Run file (Recommended) then click Start full scan at the top.
  • At this time Runscanner.exe may request access to the Internet through your firewall please allow it to do so, it will then run for two or three minutes.
  • On completion it will ask for a location to save the file and a name. It will do this for both the .run file and the log file
  • Call the .run file "Select a name" and save it to your desktop. You will see the .run file on your desktop. Upload that file here.

Hello rosemary1177,

Sorry for the delay. Now that you are back please follow the instructions at post number 3 but make sure it is an up to date Scan. That is delete the old Runscan you did and run a new one to upload.

To attach a file, do the following:

* Click Add Reply
* Under the reply panel is the Attachments Editor
* Browse to find the attachment file you want to upload, highlight the file by clicking once on it, then click the green Upload button
* Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
* Click again on the icon that then shows to insert the attachment into your post.

Hi rosemary1177,

That text one won't work. Guess my instructions have mislead you.

Lets just upload the .run file. You may have to run Runscanner again to get it.

Just see if these shortened instructions will work :)

To attach a file, do the following:

* Click Add Reply
* Under the reply panel is the Attachments Editor
* Browse to find the attachment file you want to upload, highlight the file by clicking once on it, then click the green Upload button

I have done a new run under the title Hacienda.run and uploaded it. According to what it says on the page, it should be available under "manage current attachments", wherever that is located. Let me know if you find it.

Hello rosemary 1177,

Not there and now I think I know why.

After you have uploaded please click on the Manage Current Attachments panel (just above the Browse button).

On the left you will see a icon like a letter with a little green cross on it.

Please click on that and it should upload to the thread.

Let me know how you get on.

Hello rosemary1177,

Download the attachment at the end of this post (this will be your runscanner file fixed by me)

  • Save it to your desktop then double click the runscanner icon this will run the program.
  • You will notice several entries in red and in blue.
  • Click the button at the top called Fix selected items
  • Accept the warning(s) and repeat until they are all gone.
  • Reboot your PC
Next

Kaspersky only works if you are using Internet Explorer.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.

Click on the Kaspersky Online Scanner button. A box will come up, click Accept, this will allow it to install an ActiveX component and download its latest anti-virus database. (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)

  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    * Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    * Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    * Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi rosemary1177,

Sorry,
I copied file to desktop. When I click on the file you sent, it asks where it can be opened, but nothing on my computer opens it even though the runscanner.exe is on my desktop. I used the "browse" function with no effect. I thought perhaps I was to run the runscanner.exe file again but that only produced another faulty file which couldn't be opened. What am I doing wrong? Where is the icon I'm to click on located?

Please ask these questions in the forum.

Have you tried opening Runscanner and from there opening the Hacienda fix file?

When you open Runscanner there should be a button at centre towards the top that says Open Run File click on that and navigate to Hacienda fix and open it.

Let me know how you get on.

regards
emeraldnzl

PS I have just download it from here and it ran ok on my computer. I wanted to see if somehow it had got corrupted but it doesn't seem to have.
