A friends computer was used by this young ( 8 & 11) daughters for a few hours while he wasn't home. In this short time things have gone very wrong. The system is barely responsive at all - irght-click of the desktop take a minute or more for the menu to appear. The contents of both the "Printer & Faxes" and "Network Connections" folders are gone. The desktop icons are gone. The taskbar is quite short - un readable but not gone. Setting to 'hide' mode makes it shrink to a single line & then expand to about 15 pixels tall when moused over. He has been running SpyBot every week for about a year. It shows no problems at all right now. And McAffee is current and running. I am at a loss to figure out what happened. I guess what I need to know is if some malware has attacked or if it was just screwed up real bad.

Please read this post completely. It may make it easier for you if you print, or copy and paste this post to a new text document for reference later.

This will likely be a few steps process in removing the malware that has infected your system. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.



A malicious .DLL file is disrupting the LSP chain on your computer. We need to get rid of it.

• Please download LSPFix from here.
• Run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading.
• Check the I know what I'm doing box.
• In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of mmchost.dll.
• Select every instance of mmchost.dll and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.
• When you are done click Finish>>.

Then post a fresh HijackThis log

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.

• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
  (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
• Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Ok - a little problem.....
I saved, extracted & ran RunThis.bat.
It ran for a while and then prompted to press a key to reboot.
When it reboots I get this message on a black screen with a blue top border that says www.dell.com:

Loading PBR for descriptor 2... done.
A disk read error has occured
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

I press the keys for a reboot and it repeats the message. Then I powered off and got the same message.
Any ideas?

Can you boot to the Recovery Console? If so, run the following command:

CHKDSK /R

If that wont help, run the following commands:

Okay, we can use an alternative recovery console:

• Please download BurnAtOnce and save it to your desktop. Click on Downloads, then on burnatonce 0.99.5
  
  • Install it by double-clicking on the file bao0995.exe that you downloaded.
  • Click Next, accept the license agreement, and click Next until the button says "Install". Click "Install" to finish.
• Download the rc.iso file.
• Save it to your desktop.
• Put a blank CD in your computer’s burner.
• Right-click on the file rc.iso, and select "burnatonce" from the menu.
• Confirm that the box under the menu at the top says "rc.iso".
• Click the "Write" button.
• When the disk finishes, eject the CD.
• Configure the computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For information about how to do this, see your computer documentation, or contact your computer manufacturer.
• Insert the Image of rc.iso that you copied to CD into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
• When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
• You will be prompted with the following options:
  

  A. To setup Windows XP, press Enter.
  B. To repair Windows XP installation using recovery console, press R.

Whew - this took some work - and imagination. The system would not boot from CD - when it started to examine the current system configuration it went to a black screen and did nothing else. I tried two other XP system disks that I knew were ok and the same thing happened. Found descriptions of the same symptom online and it seemed that the XP startup would not continue with the drive in its current state, so I took an old unused drive, installed as the master and attached the problem drive as slave. The Cd was able to boot. I did a chkdsk d: /r. I replaced the original boot drive as master and removed the temp drive, loaded the recovery console and then ran FixBoot, then FixMbr. Rebooted the hard drive and a window opened called SDFix and got a message "Finishing Malware Check". After a reboot the desktop is blank and the taskbar is short (like I described at the beginning). Glad to hear its finally managed to boot to Windows

Lets have a look at a ComboFix log, as there is more still there:

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

• When finished, it will produce a report for you.
• Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Try running it again, but if the same thing happens, open task-manager > use the processes tab (press ctrl alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.

If that works, can you also say what process you had to end.

If not, we'll look at another tool
