Thanks for all the help so far fenzodahl512. I want to use the Avira AntiVir but was having some trouble getting to the site. I will get rid of Norton and put Avira on as soon as I can get to the download.

My computer has been running great for the past few days. The desktop changing stopped right about the time we started this exercise and then the popups stopped completely 2-3 days ago so I don't see any evidence of any virus/malware. Things seem to be running smooth now and I feel like it's actually running faster at times so this is very good!

Here is my current DSS log and I can post another after I get Avira on here, just not sure it will be tonight.

Thanks again.

I'm glad your computer now is good.. Lets do this then...

Please show hidden files and folders

Please reboot into Safe Mode

In Safe Mode, please manually find and delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c006CAAC.dat

Still in Safe Mode, Please copy and paste the following into a Notepad

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\__c006CAAC]

Save it in desktop as Fix.reg and in Save as type: choose All Files

A new registry file will then created on your desktop. It should look like this: Posted Image

Just double-click the file and choose Yes at prompt.

If you do not sure how to make a registry file, please visit HERE for the tutorial.

Please post me a fresh DSS log in your next reply..

fenzodahl512,

Please see post 18 for my last post. This will be kind of confusing, but post 19 I typed when I didn't have an internet connection, and then I thought I lost it so I retyped it and posted it back as post 13. Apparently the one I thought I lost posted itself sometime later. In post 18 I explained that I couldn't get Kaspersky to work, not sure if that is a problem.

Anyway, I'm at work now and will finish the latest request when I get home.

Thank you.

fenzodahl512,

I followed your instructions, but cannot delete the file __c006CAAC.dat. I get a window saying it is in use by another program. I did not create the registry file since the first step didn't work and wasn't sure if I should continue.

I have posted another dss log anyway hoping it would help.

Please visit below webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. DO NOT select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix (located in C:\combofix.txt) when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

I ran Combofix and posted the logs in the previous post but since then got rid of Norton and installed AntiVir. AntiVir did find a problem and I quarantined it, I could post the log if needed. Since I ran the Antivir scan I will post another hijackthis log below.

Thank you for your continued help with this!!

Your log looks very good to me.. Lets do this...

Please download CleanUp! by stevengould.org and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click CleanUp452.exe and install CleanUp! to your computer
  • Open CleanUp! and click on Options.. button.
  • Under General tab, choose Standard CleanUp! and then click Ok
  • Click on the CleanUp! button. When it asked you to logoff Windows, click on Yes
  • Let your Windows rebooted (or do it manually) and continue with the next step

NEXT

Lets run F-Secure online scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
  • Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
  • Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
  • If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
  • When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
  • Click Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
Notes:
  • This scan will only work with Internet Explorer
  • You must have administrator rights to run this scan
  • This scan can take several hours, so please be patient

How is your computer now?
