So then I said he should probably do a recovery and get his XP CD.
He doesn't have one..unfortunately...
so..now i'm stuck. I wanna help him, but dunno how.

The F-nimda virus can cause this. I would check in the malware forum after you get the desktop up and running. Can you get into the desktop in safe mode by hitting the F8 key while the computer is starting up and then selecting safemode.
If you can get there then go to the malware forum( on another computer) and read this article.
Follow its steps to see if you can get the computer up and running. If not, get a Malware tech to help you find the problem.
