Update 5/22/05: Norton deleted these files when I did a scan, so please disregard the message below. Didn't know how to delete it. Thanks anyway!

Hi,
Norton Antivirus 2004 found two at-risk files, one ending with 9f4.jet-gsm[1].htm and C50PY341\xxxcenter[1].htm (don't ask; my curious family members!), which it could not delete. I have Spyware Blaster on my computer and regularly run Spybot and Adaware SE. I followed the steps on your You_Must_Read_This_Before_Posting_A_Hijackthis_Log page. Here is my log:

Hi sue318 and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
  • One
    Two
  • Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
  • Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!
Then post a HijackThis log (not attach) together with the log of the L2Mfix

Hi sue318,

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Download the Host Here
Please do not use program yet

Download and install CleanUp! Here
We will use this program later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Open up the Host program.
  • Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
  • Click back up Host files
  • then click Restore orginal host files
  • close program
4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}_ - (no file)

Optional but recommended
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr_.exe

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

9. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Viewpoint Manager <-------Optional see above

10. Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint <-------Optional see above

11. Open up Ewido and do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

12. Run the program CleanUp!

13. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

14. Please post an Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log to verify all is good. Ensure you rehide your hidden files and folders back to the way they were.

Hi,
Things were going well in following your directions until I got to Ewido; the Archives box could not be checked (I was in Safe Mode as directed).

Also, I've been getting emails every time someone posts on the "5 days with no reply" topic. Any way to stop that?

Dont' worry about the Archives button then, just run the scan as is ;)

You can unsubscribe at any time by logging into your control panel and clicking on the "View Subscriptions" link.

You will find the My Controls link under the header of the board.
Click that one and under the header Subscriptions on the left side click on "View topics"
In the list of topics find the section Off-Topic
There will be a link to this one. Put a checkmark in the box behind it and scroll down untill you see Unsubscribe.

Hi Sue,

Just a few random bad files to clean up.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cd_clint.dll
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

    Do that for the following files also, until you get to the last one, then click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\inneradinstall.log
C:\Documents and Settings\Sue\Application Data\Lycos
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fiz1
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.inf

Hi,
You asked me to delete these files in HJT:

...C:\WINDOWS\system32\inneradinstall.log [/B] OK
C:\Documents and Settings\Sue\Application Data\Lycos [/B] Couldn't find Application Data in Sue
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fiz1 [/B] Couldn't find fiz1 in system 32
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.inf [/B] HJT wanted to delete the whole Downloaded Program Files so I backed out of it.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cd_clint.dll [/B] this was the first deletion in your instructions
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fiz1 [/B] Same as above?
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\INNERADINSTALL.LOG [/B] same as above?
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kyf.dat [/B] Couldn't find kyf.dat in SYSTEM 32.

Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\FLEOK [/B] I found FLEOK, but HJT wouldn't delete folders from the "delete file on reboot" button.

I rebooted myself, since I didn't know that the last file I found would be the last, so I had clicked "No" to rebooting.

So, the computer has quieted down; I can't hear it running unless I put my ear to it now.
I wondered if my son playing Runescape online may add malware; my guess is that I could've picked it up anywhere.

I scanned with Norton after all this, and now WxBug.EXE came up and could not be deleted; so I followed the Norton website directions for that adware to delete a value and two keys from the registry. I couldn't find the value and one of the keys, but I deleted the other key. Is this anything to worry about?

Now this should do it :tazz:

Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):(this means go to start>My computer>windows>system32)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\FLEOK
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fiz1

I think it would serve you well to clean your registry!

*Please dowload: RegSeeker.
*Click on "Clean The Registry" in the left panel.
*Check all boxes (make sure the backup box in the lower left corner is selected!).
*After it runs, click "Select All" on the bottom, then right-click on any selected item in the window and select "Delete Selected Items".
*Click "Quit RegSeeker".

Now, open any of your installed programs, and make sure that everything opens ok. If so, reboot, then go back and run the RegSeeker again, do the same thing again if anything is found. When RegSeeker finds nothing else, then it's clean!

Hi again,
I removed FLEOK with Windows Explorer, but I couldn't find fiz1. Couldn't find kyf.dat in SYSTEM32.
RegSeeker cleaned out over 1000 items on the first go-round(!); I did 5 or 6 more; the last three produced 4 items that won't delete. They are Applications/WINWARD.EXE, Software/Yahoo/Pager/Profiles/Alerts (2 of them), and Software/Yahoo/Pager/Skins. I'll take four over 1100-some, though!
My programs seem to be working fine.

Great job, it appears your computer is clean ;)

Ensure you rehide your hidden files and folders back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE

Spybot S&D


If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast


The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4

Spywareguard

IE/Spyad


A Firewall is a must! Here are 2 good free versions:

Sygate

ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

This site is a great source for tightening up security on Internet Explorer settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided

I reset System Restore.

I regularly use Ad-awareSE and Spybot.

Re: antivirus programs, I was afraid to use free ones. Are they as good as Norton (irony intended)?

I have used Spywareblaster and Spyguard in the past but wondered if it was ok to use multiple spy protection; is it? I know the first is a preventive program, which I liked.

For a firewall, I currently use the one Microsoft supplies.

I was considering Mozilla as a browser, but I have a LOT of genealogy info saved on Favorites; is it easily transferable to Mozilla's version of Favorites? If I do change, I guess I'd better get one of the free firewalls you suggest.

The link to netfiles.uiuc.edu was eye-opening; I did change a lot of my security settings and feel confident I can add bumped websites to Trusted Sites easily.

Windows is supposed to install automatic updates on my machine; does this include the Critical ones, or do I have to check for them on the Microsoft website?

I would say its a matter of opinion. I used to pay for McAfee every month ;) , now I use AVG Free (as well as alot of our staff members) and I haven't had a problem.

I would suggest that you only have one of the preventors running. The detection ones you can run multiple ones, the only thing you might notice is that you will pick up files in the quarantined sections of the other detectors. (as a reminder, never use more than one Anti-Virus ;)) And ALWAYS UPDATE THEM REGULARLY!! (at least once a week)

Yes, it automatically transfers the Favorites :woot:. Its not so much that FireFox or Opera are safer, its that most of the yuckies are oriented towards Internet Explorer, which in turn makes the other safer. I use Firefox and highly suggest it. They have alot of neat features that IE doesn't have :hug: Read up on them http://www.mozilla.o...irefox/all.html If you decide to get firefox, you still will keep IE, becasue this is the only way you can get update thru microsoft.
