missing ntoskrnl.exe

I have a laptop computer that is giving me the error message - Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt <windows root> \system32\notskrnl.exe please reinstall a copy of this above file.
My question is can I copy this from my PC and install to the laptop as I don't know where or if I even have an installation disk. And if I can how do I get it to install when all it will do is go directly to the black error message screen?
