Normally adding password protection to a site requires a scripting language of which most free web site hosting do not allow. In this case, you must use a third party password protection where the processing is done by a hosting service issuing the scripting code. For example, bravehost has password protection web tool which it will process for you, but it comes with their little ad button. You also must sign up for the free account to get and use the password protection tool.
