Hello.

My computer has been going very slow. Did the following procedures and it what seems to be im infected. It looks like Trojen.Agent , Malware.Trace, and Adware.MyWebSearch.

Also, i'd like to uninstall Norton and all its components since it's expired. In place, I wish to install AntiVir and Comodo.

Thank you in advance!
Here are my logs:

Hi Sidburn2k7,

Welcome to the site! :) My name's Matt T and I'll be helping clean up your computer. :) I'm currently looking over your log. I'll need a bit of time to research your log fully, so please bear with me.

  • Please work through the fix in the order it's posted, if you can't complete a step, skip it and tell me in your next post.
  • If there's anything you don't understand, you have a question, or you're unsure of the instructions please don't be afraid to ask and post here for clarification before proceeding with the fix.

Hi Sidburn2k7,

It looks like Malwarebytes took out most if not all of the infection. We'll get a couple more scans to make sure you're 100% clean.

i'd like to uninstall Norton and all its components since it's expired. In place, I wish to install AntiVir and Comodo.

Okay, to uninstall Norton run the Norton Removal Tool. The download pages for Antivir and Comodo are here and here respectively. It might pay to unplug your internet while you're unprotected (between when Norton is uninstalled and you're installing Antivir and Comodo). Make sure you update both Antivir and Comodo and scan with Antivir after installing them.

Posted Image 1) Update Java and Adobe Reader
  • Download JavaRa to your Desktop and Unzip it into its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select
  • Click Remove Older Versions
  • Accept any prompts
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and click Search For Updates
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search
  • Click on the Open Webpage button
  • Download and install the latest Java Runetime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

    Please also update Adobe Reader.
Posted Image 2) Uninstall Programs

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
Please go Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Morpheus
Optional Removals
Viewpoint Manager is considered foistware instead of malware as it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

Morpheus and P2P programs in general are legal themselves, but much of the content downloaded with them is downloaded illegally. They are also a great way to infect yourself in malware.

It's up to you if you want to remove the above two programs, however I recommend you do.

Please note any other programs that you don't recognize in that list in your next response.
After removing the programs, please reboot back into normal mode.

Posted Image 3) HijackThis
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.
  • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://dell.myway.com/
  • R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Posted Image 4) RSIT
  • Download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by Random/Random to your Desktop
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT
  • Click Continue at the Disclaimer Screen
  • Once it has completed, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (which will be maximized/open) and info.txt (which will be minimized/closed)
  • You might have to spread the logs over a couple of replies to get them both posted
In Your Next Post:
  • The log from RSIT
  • A fresh Hijack This log

hey matt, that's great! :)

Ok done. I removed Norton and now have AntiVir and Comodo running atm. Did scans on both and also updated them.

Done. Both JRE and Adobe are now updated.

I removed Morpheus and Viewpoint. I had downloaded Morpheus but never even used it. Also in safe mode, i looked and everything seems to be ok in that list. I dont think i saw anything unfamiliar.

  • Make sure the following is checked.
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Hey Sidburn2k7,

Congratulations, your logs show that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN!

Just a couple of last things to do.

Posted Image 1) Uninstall The Tools We Used
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • Please allow OTMoveIt to access the internet if your firewall or other real time protection attempts to block it.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You might be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
Posted Image 2) Flush Your Restore Points
  • Go to Start then right-click on My Computer then click on Properties > System Restore at the top.
  • Click Turn Off System Restore On All Drives then click Apply then OK.
  • Reboot your system then go to Start then right-click on My Computer then click on Properties > System Restore at the top.
  • Click Turn On System Restore On All Drives then click Apply then OK.
Posted Image 3) Preventing Re-infection

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Good luck, safe surfing and have a great day :)

Regards,
Matt
