Here's my hijack this log. The virus i'm having promblems with is the "Power Antivirus 2009". I randomly get a window that pops up telling me my computer is infected blah blah, if you click the "close" button, or the "X" at the top it automatically opens an explorer window to the web page where you are to download the program to solve the problem. i was smarter than that so i did not download anything. Thank you in advance!

*edit*- i just now started getting pop up ads now as well. literally right after i posted this. it was for the "dumb test" by "Quizrocket.com"

Hello Ace Brown welcome back :)
==========
Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running Combofix >ComboFix Instructions
We now suggest that you install the Windows Recovery Console.
The Windows recovery console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
If you already have the Recovery Console installed then you do not have to re-install it just proceed with running Combofix

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished all of that, along with a new HijackThis log.

If the Recovery Console fails to install discontinue and alert me and we will continue

Just the instructions on the Combofix page.
When you get the file downloaded you will just drag it onto Combofix and it will install it for you.

Everything looks good on this end.

AVG 7.5 is going to be discontinued.
You can download 8.0 which includes a free antispyware sheild as well as an antivirus. > AVG free 8.0
================
Please download OT CLeanit from Here save it to your desktop.
Double click on OT Clean it to run it.
Then click on Clean up.
Restart your computer when prompted.
This will remove what tools we used.
======================
Use a Firewall:

Install and use a firewall with outbound protection
While the firewall built into Windows XP is adequate to protect you from incoming attacks, it will not be much help in alerting you to programs already on your PC attempting to connect to remote servers
I therefore strongly recommend that you install one of the following free firewalls: Sunbelt Free Firewall or Zonealarm
See Bleepingcomputer's excellent tutorial to help using and understanding a firewall here
Note: You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as seriously impairing the performance of your PC.
=============================
Delete\uninstall anything else that we have used.

System Restore
Then I will need you to reset your System Restore points.
The link below shows how to create a clean restore point.
How to Turn On and Turn Off System Restore in Windows XP
http://support.micro...kb/310405/en-us

If you are using Vista then see this link > http://www.bleepingc...143.html#manual
=====================================
After that your log is clean. :)

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people.
You do not have to have all or any of them they are only suggestions.
This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

Spybot Search & Destroy-Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

Spyware Blaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

Spywareguard-Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

IE-SPYAD- puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

Tony Klein article To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

i wanted to ask you also about an error message i get when i restart my computer. I forgot to mention per the PM i sent you, i have gotten this message on occasion in the past. seems like it comes and goes. it reads:

WMP54Gv4.exe application error

the instruction "0x04412bd" referenced memory at "0x00000168".
The memory could not be "read".

click "OK" to terminate program.
click "cancel" to debug the program.

My computer also starts to slow down after it sits, say overnight. Once i open more than a couple of windows it slows down. Usually a restart helps.

thanks

Hi sorry I hadn't recieved a notice that you replied.

The first issue I woud re-install that apllication.

For the second issue I would try to upgrade your ram.

See if that would help at all.

Let me know if all is well with the computer after that ?

Hello! Sorry i didn't respond to you, didn't get notice either.

Anyhow, i figured out what the error message was from and i am working on correcting that.

Secondly, do you think a ram ugrade is necessary? it seems that only occasionally internet explorer gets very very slow which in turn seems to slow everything down. But, not always.

i have also gotten a few pop ups since last we spoke and the url is usually casalmedia.com/ etc etc. and it usually is advertising screen savers. Don't know if this is related to the adware or just simply a popup from a website. Thanks for the help!
