Hey all. Recently my dad's computer has been having some very strange issues. These issues include a low virtual memory warning (despite not have altering virtual memory settings), Spybot S&D warning of blocked downloads when browsing harmless sites (such as GeeksToGo), and the target application loosing focus. By loosing focus, I mean you'll be typing, and suddenly the cursor is gone and the window border is dulled, as if another application had the focus of the operating system. These problems go away when I end QUc152Fp.exe in Task Manager. However, it will start itself again after awhile. Deleting the file, located in the system32 folder, is not effective, as it respawns when I restart. There is also another file there, called QUc152Fp.exe.a_a I have tried deleting it too, but it also reappears upon system restart. Googling shows no info on either of these files. Am I dealing with a new infection? Thanks for any help.

Before running a new scan let's clean out the temporary folders.




Download ATF Cleaner to your Desktop.

• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  
• Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  
• Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:

• Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  
• Click the Empty Selected button.
  
• NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser, do this also:

• Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  
• Close ALL Internet browsers (very important).
  
• Click the Empty Selected button.
  
• NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.




Now download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.




Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.

• Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  
• Open the OTScanIt folder and double-click on OTScanIt.exe to start the program (if you are running on Vista then right-click the program and choose Run as Administrator).
  
• In the Drivers section click on Non-Microsoft.
  
• Under Additional Scans click the checkboxes in front of the following items to select them:
  
  
  • Reg - BotCheck
    
    File - Additional Folder Scans
    
    
• Do not change any other settings.
  
• Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  
• Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  
• When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.

Before running a new scan let's clean out the temporary folders.




Download ATF Cleaner to your Desktop.

• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  
• Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  
• Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:

• Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  
• Click the Empty Selected button.
  
• NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser, do this also:

• Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  
• Close ALL Internet browsers (very important).
  
• Click the Empty Selected button.
  
• NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.




Now download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.




Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.

• Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  
• Open the OTScanIt folder and double-click on OTScanIt.exe to start the program (if you are running on Vista then right-click the program and choose Run as Administrator).
  
• In the Drivers section click on Non-Microsoft.
  
• Under Additional Scans click the checkboxes in front of the following items to select them:
  
  
  • Reg - BotCheck
    
    File - Additional Folder Scans
    
    
• Do not change any other settings.
  
• Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  
• Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  
• When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  
• Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
  
• Save the file to your desktop or other location where you can find it back.

Thanks for the help Thunderbird1988. A few new things occured this time. First of all, the offending file, QUc152Fp.exe, was not running. It (and its sister file QUc152Fp.exe.a_a) are still in the system32 folder, but for whatever reason, it decided not to run this time when I booted up the computer. Second of all, now Firefox doesn't work. Upon trying to open it, I get an error saying: "Exception Processing Message c0000102 Parameters 75b6bf9c 75b6bf9c 75b6bf9c 75b6bf9c". Subsequent attempts to open it result in the message saying: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." However, Task Manager shows no firefox.exe running. After about the 5th time trying, I get another message reading: "The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\Fran\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\gvv7g7b7.default\prefs.js is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."

Anyways, I'm not sure what to think of this, as a profile named "gvv7g7b7" seems a bit suspicious to me. OTScanIt log is attached (but keep in mind the QUc152Fp.exe process was not running). I zipped it, because the log was too big for me to attach otherwise.

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed either a message box will popup telling you that it is finished or you will be asked to reboot to finish the fix. If it is finished, click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here.




If a reboot is required, click the "Yes" button to reboot the machine. After the reboot, OTScanIt will finish moving any files that could not be moved during the fix and NotePad will open with the final results at that time. Post that information back here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

After you have fllowed these steps please post the following thing:

Your log is clean. How is your computer running?

Upgrading Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
• Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
• Click on Continue.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

The computer is running alright, other than some odd hard drive thrashing (hard drive thrashes for 5 seconds, stops for 5 seconds, thrashes for 5 seconds, stops for 5 seconds, etc.). However, as you've told me my machine is clean, I'm pretty sure it is a hardware issue, rather than a malware issue.

This will remove the tools we used during the process of cleaning your computer.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
