Hello to you experts here on the forum. Wife did a search for pix of our wonderboy Mike (the fish) Phelps and his well rewarded gold medals and somehow got our computer infected with the above. Screen now has large red box on desktop. It appears that all wallpapers are gone. A McAfee scan showed no infected files or viruses. I tried to do a System Restore, but all restore points mysteriously disappeared.(every date and time prior to 2:04:07 PM)

McAfee log shows this at around time of her search:08/19/08 2:04:07 PM Startup Items Allowed

As these processes were just done, computer appears to be rid of red warning box on desktop at the moment. Will repost as to the condition of computer later today.

Are there any other processes that I can do such as Ad-Aware, Kapersky, system restore points, etc. since McAfee failed to find anything, to prevent these types of things from hitting again?

Thank you for your attention to this thread.

I would definatley get a better antivirus.
McAfee rarely does anything to prevent infections.

I would go with Kaspersky.

Everything looks good on this end.
You can check anfd fix this entry with Hijackthis:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - (no file)

Then close HIjackthis.
==================
Use a Firewall:
(If you already have one then no need for more)

Install and use a firewall with outbound protection
While the firewall built into Windows XP is adequate to protect you from incoming attacks, it will not be much help in alerting you to programs already on your PC attempting to connect to remote servers
I therefore strongly recommend that you install one of the following free firewalls: Sunbelt Free Firewall or Zonealarm
See Bleepingcomputer's excellent tutorial to help using and understanding a firewall here
Note: You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as seriously impairing the performance of your PC.

=============================
Delete\uninstall anything else that we have used.

System Restore
Then I will need you to reset your System Restore points.
The link below shows how to create a clean restore point.
How to Turn On and Turn Off System Restore in Windows XP
http://support.micro...kb/310405/en-us

If you are using Vista then see this link > http://www.bleepingc...143.html#manual
=====================================
After that your log is clean. :)

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people.
You do not have to have all or any of them they are only suggestions.
This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

Spybot Search & Destroy-Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

Spyware Blaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

Spywareguard-Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

IE-SPYAD- puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

Tony Klein article To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

kahdah,

Once again thanks for your prompt reply.

Since I have five users on this computer it appears that I must run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware for each signon? I ran this process under one signon and noticed tabs for desktop and screensaver re-appeared under display properties for this user. The remaining four signons notably had tabs for desktop and screensaver still missing.

Could it be that the 4 infected registry values and 2 infected registry data items state " HKEY_CURRENT_USER" , makes corrections only for that user only, thereby forcing me to have to run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware for the remaining users and do the same fix as instructed?

The reason I have McAfee Security Center ( anti-virus, firewall etc.) is that it was free with Verizon DSL. I will look into your suggestions as soon as I get the above problems cleared up first. This virus appears to be a pain in the *** bugger, as there are quite a few threads pertaining to this problem.

Kahdah,

Good Morning to you and hope your having a fine day so far.
Sorry for delay in replying , kids (hence ,reason for separate user accounts) were hogging the computer.

As instructed, I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware for the remaining four users and allowed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to correct the registry.

Hijackthis was also done for the remaining four users as well. Most items for all five logs were similar, except for one. Attached is the one that is different. Can you please review the attached Hijackthis log? Should item 018 be fixed by Hijackthis? Any other items?

Yes fix that entry then

*Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

Then I will need you to show hidden Files \Folders.
To do this:
*Click Start.
*Open My Computer.
*Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
*Select the View Tab.
*Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
*Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
*Click Yes to confirm.
*Click OK

After that using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore")
Delete this file listed below:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll

Then exit Windows Explorer.

Now reset your Hidden files\folders to hidden.
To do this:
To reset:*Click Start.
*Open My Computer.
*Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
*Select the View Tab.
*Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not Show hidden files and folders.
*Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
*Click Yes to confirm.
*Click OK
==================
Reboot into normal mode and follow the same cleanup procedure as before then that log is clean as well.
================
Let me know of any more issues.

Did as instructed , fixed "O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {6068e02b-aae2-42a4-9283-55b840ef3b58} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll" via Hijackthis.

Rebooted under safe mode and could not find : C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll
Rebooted under normal mode and also could not find :C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll

Reran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware : Nothing found

Reran Hijackthis and "O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {6068e02b-aae2-42a4-9283-55b840ef3b58} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll", still shows even after fix was done. Rebooted several times and still shows up.

Cannot remove this item. Is this embedded elsewhere under a different name? Is this item harmful?

Have a good day.

Actually without the file present it is not a threat but we will remove it's registry entry.

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

First, we need to backup your registry:
Please go to Start > Run
Paste in the following line:regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg
Click OK.
It won't appear to be doing anything, that's normal.
Your mouse pointer may turn to an hour glass for a minute.
Please continue when it no longer has the hour glass.

Please open up Notepad and copy all of the items in the code box below.
Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixthis.reg on your Desktop.
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter]
"CLSID"=""
Now double-click fixthis.reg.
A window will come up asking if you want to let it merge with the registry.
Click yes.
Reboot for the changes to take place and let me know how it goes.

When I double click fixthis.reg on desktop, the following window pops up:

( "Are you sure you want to add the information in C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxxx\Desktop\fixthis.reg to the registry?" Yes or No)

Is this the same as if you want to let it merge with the registry?

Sorry for the ignorance, just wanted to be sure.

Thanks
