Thank you for checking out this post.

Known problems ( not sure which might be relevent so will list all I can think of ):
  • Browser page transitions super slow/freezing
  • Difficult to open MS Word docs, also difficult to highlight text, edit, etc- cursor freezes
  • When attaching anything to an emial the program scans it forever
  • Wireless mouse kept getting frozen (not the batteries, the wired mouse works fine)
  • Computer takes more time to complete booting up- hour glass flickrers on and off for much longer than it used to

Security: I am in lostville when it comes to understanding security. I have been through a bunch of programs on different peoples advice and honestly do not know exactly what I have. A while back I bought a subscription to one, but could not install it- it said that I had to remove the Computer Associates program first and I could not find it, so ended up leaving it as is out of frustration. A few days ago when the issues started happening I downloaded zonelaram trial and spybot to try and fix it. They deleted a buch of stuff, but it did not solve any of the issues.

I manually removed all the cookies I did not recognize from all users (left things like yahoo and microsoft). I deleted the temp internet files, history, etc.

I went throught the steps recoommended in the forum- used the temp internet file deleting program, created a system restore point, and ran the malwarebytes software.

If anyone can help me get my computer back and give me some suggestions on good protection, I would really appreciate it. I am in the middle of searching for a job and am about tearing my hair out trying to navigate :) . My HJT log is below.

THANK YOU!

Sorry- getting a little loopy- forgot to post about how the fixes have effected the computer. Things are running much better now in the browser :) . Still some small heistation problems- for example- I just tried to add an emoticon to this post (gotta love the smilies)- when I placed my cursor in the text it froze for a minute, then the emoticon window took a while to open. It is still slower completing booting up and some hesitation in opening files, but not nearly as bad as it had been. Major improvement :)

When it looks to be fixed, I would love some advice on keeping it all secure. I now have recently downloaded spybot, antivir, malwarebytes and zonealarm trial.

I also have a file with a bunch of pieces of malware stuff from a previous fix attempt a few years ago- ccleaner, cwshredder, hsfix, hoster, aboutbuster, ad-aware, ewido, fixiefts, divfinst, AVG 7.0, killbox, spyware doctor, symcln, symnrt. Do you know what I should keep and what I can delete?

Last- I am not sure how it works, but are the processes that run automatically shown in the hijack logfiles? I think I have some stuff running automatically that might not be nesessary, but I am not sure what all those processes are and am hesitant to fiddle with them on my own and possible ruin something.

Thank you!!!!

=====================================================================
You only need AVira and the Zone Alarm firewall please uninstall\delete the rest.
If Zone Alarm is an antivirus then uninstall that as well.
No need for any other malware removal tools.
==============================

Please download OT CLeanit from Here save it to your desktop.
Double click on OT Clean it to run it.
Then click on Clean up.
Restart your computer when prompted.
This will remove what tools we used.
===============
Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 7 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
======================
Use a Firewall:

Install and use a firewall with outbound protection
While the firewall built into Windows XP is adequate to protect you from incoming attacks, it will not be much help in alerting you to programs already on your PC attempting to connect to remote servers
I therefore strongly recommend that you install one of the following free firewalls: Sunbelt Free Firewall or Zonealarm
See Bleepingcomputer's excellent tutorial to help using and understanding a firewall here
Note: You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as seriously impairing the performance of your PC.

Delete\uninstall anything else that we have used.

System Restore
Then I will need you to reset your System Restore points.
The link below shows how to create a clean restore point.

After that your log is clean. :)

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people.
You do not have to have all or any of them they are only suggestions.
This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

Spybot Search & Destroy-Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

Spyware Blaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

Spywareguard-Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

IE-SPYAD- puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

Tony Klein article To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Hi again

I fixed most of the optional items you suggested. Then I deleted all of the old malware stuff including the spybot and malwarebytes, then ran the OT clean program. Since the Zonealarm I downloaded was a trial of security suite andnot just the firewall, I deleted taht thinking that I would go in directly and download tjust the firewall. When I click the download, it gets about 78% complete and a box pops up saying tha I do not have permission to make this change and that I need to do so from an administrators account. Then it says that this application is already in place.

We only use one user account on our computer. I think there is an admin user account, but I cant seem to access it. A few years ago my original user account got somehow corrupted and a gay came to fix it- when he did he said that he scrapped that user aco[bleep] and made a new one for us. When i look in my C drive under docs and settings I see that there our usual user account and and admin one. When I log out of the computer and try to log back in using the word admin or administrator it will not allow me in. I really dont know how to get into the other account -yikes!

I cannot find zonelalrm in the add or remove programs window, though it shows up in programs in the start menu, it will not open.

Also I just found in the control panel that we have Windows security including a firewall and antispyware that are marked as on. I was not sure if we should keep them as well.

I have not taken any of the further steps in your instructions as I thought to wait till I get he firewall issue fixed.

Thanks for helping with my big fat security mess :)

I deleted the zonealarm and downloaded the Sunbelt- looks good so far!

Problem- I went on to getting the new Java. I downloaded the setup prgram and closed out all of my programs including browsers. When I went to remove the old Java form my add/remove programs in the control panel, all of the "remove" buttons were missing :) . I have never seen that before. I can highlight any program in there an the remove buttons are just no longer there. I tried rebooting to see if they would come back, but they didnt. Any suggestions?

Also, now that I have the Sunbelt and Avira, should I leave the Windows firewall and antivirus on or turn them off?

Thanks again :)

Windows Firewall usually will turn off by itself when it detects a third party firewall installed.
But if it is still on then turn it off.

For java do this :

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

When I click on the JavaRa link in your last post, it opens a browser window- all that is displayed in the window is "Ad blocked here by SPF. " I don't see any bar or place where I can allow it. I think that means my new firewall is blocking it, but am not sure how to turn off the blocker in Sunbelt. I read the intro information in Sunbelt, but cant find any info on how change the popup blocker, etc settings. Any ideas on this one?

Right click on the firewall icon next to your clock and choose disable firewall.
You can re-enable it after you download the program.

OK! I got the old Java out, the new Java in and turned on and off system restore and set a new restore point. Stick a fork in me- we are about done :)

About the optional programs you suggested- since I have the Antivir, is it OK to have Spybot and Spywareguard as well or will they conflict?
