Hi all!

Am working on my wife's laptop that has the following as being found on her pc:
1. Virus - Mal/EncPk-CR
2. Malware - my way - mysearch

Not seeing much in the way of active malware running in HijackThis. Let's do some cleanup and a scan.

First, use Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files,
cookies, cache, ect...
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.


Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  
• Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.

Thanks for the reply. Anti-malware found nothing. I have yet to run a scan using system analyzer (it was something that bestbuy used to scan her pc). She keeps having issues with the computer starting up...she presses the power button and nothing happens. It usually takes 3 or 4 or more times to power the computer on. That is aside from the main problem though. I know bestbuy won't touch or fix the problem until any and all viruses or malware are noon existent. That being said here are the anti-malware and hijackthis logs.

Hi,

Let's update Java and run a Kaspersky scan. It doesn't fix anything but it's one of the most thorough virus scanners there are.

The power not coming on sounds like it's just a bad switch, that shouldn't be a big deal.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 7.

• Go to the Sun Java Website
• Click on the download button next to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7
• Check the circle next to I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
• Click on the link Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk.
• Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
• Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
• Reboot your computer
• Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
• Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
• Reboot your computer

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

• Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
• It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
• When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
• Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
  • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    Archives
    Mail databases
• Click on My Computer under Scan.
• Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
• You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
• Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
• Please post this log in your next reply.

Post a new HJT log and let me know how it's running.

Thanks for the help. I was running System Analyzer from WebRoot and it found the Mal/EncPk-CR virus again and it gave myway-my search as an informational item.

I will follow through on what you have told me to do next which is to update java and then run a virus scan using Kapersky's online scanner.

The MyWay/MyWebSearch is pretty harmless adware....won't do any real harm and is considered an optional fix by some, although I don't want it on my systems.

The Mal/EncPk-CR appears to be a bit more serious. Does the scanner give you any file and or location? That would help.

We'll see what Kaspersky turns up.

Kaspersky is as thorough as they get so I'm starting to think this may be a false positive. I'm not familiar with the Webroot tool. I tried downloading it and running it on my machine but I get page not found and 404 errors. I see references to the Geek Squad version but still can't download. Does it give a report at the end? If so does it say what file and in what location the malware is located?

It does give a report at the end, but doesn't tell where the [bleep] problem is. With Kapersky coming up nil, I am wondering what the heck is up with this. She has been having major problems on starting up her laptop and I am at the conclusion it is hardware, but I have to find this 'virus' and get rid of all traces before they consider repairing the [bleep] thing under warranty. This bites!

I will keep trying to find this nasty thing. I have seen Sophos listings with it identifying it. I am going to try and download and run a scan to see what happens next.

Report back with findings ASAP.

I wasn't able to use Sophos trial ware. I have upgraded to AVG 8, but it finds no virus. However, when I run Webroot's Analyzer, it now posts the virus as :

Mal/Behav-041

which I have come to discover that it is another name or alias for the bkdr_cafe06.svr according to TrendMicro's site here:

This seems serious and is really freaking me out here. The analyzer can export a file but it becomes an *.mht file, whatever that is??

Any thoughts on this? I have tried to find out where the virus is located, but it doesn't list a link or location (what a dumb program)...I am hoping against hope that this is just a false-positive, but it isn't looking that way so far.

OK let's try something here....

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

• Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
• It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any key to restart the PC.
• Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
• When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
• Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
• A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log
