I was having problems using yahoo and being redirected to this ad.yieldmanager.com crap. I was having some other problems with frequent computer lock ups before this started, and I had been using spybot and windows defender firewall. Spybot found nothing, so I uninstalled spybot and windows defender, and downloaded free trial mcafee total protection software. I also cleaned up my computer at pc pitstop. The yahoo redirection started happening immediately after I scanned with mcafee the first time. Mcafee did not find any threats either. I emailed mcafee about the problems, and they sent me instructions to scan DOS, which I also did and disabled system restore as they instructed. Again Mcafee found nothing and advised me to use their paid service telling me yahoo redirection was being caused by a virus. Since I did not even have that prob before installing mcafee and I have had probs with them before, I uninstalled mcafee, and purchased the avira suite. Avira found and quarantined 8 problem files, but yahoo was still redirecting to the friggin ad.yield manager site. I then found the forum instructing me to uninstall the redirection software, which I did. Now I am no longer redirected, but I get an avira security pop up warning everytime I search yahoo saying ''the current web page is trying to open a site in your Trusted Sites list. do you want to allow this? and shows current web page is ad.yieldmanager.com and trusted site is re://ieframe.dll. At least now I can search yahoo, but the pop ups are annoying. I followed your prep list and now the only protection software I shoud have on my computer are avira, ad-aware, ad-watch, and hijackthis. But there is still a mcafee virtual technician icon on my desktop even though I uninstalled it. I am also having trouble charging the battery on my dell laptop and I get a startup message saying my computer cannot recognize my power adapter, although it does power up. I do not know if this has anything to do with a virus or not. Here is my hijack report:

Hello txlegalpro,

Please do the following:

ComboFix

Please visit below webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. DO NOT select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix (located in C:\combofix.txt) when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

  • Click Save and save the file to your desktop
  • Close all McAfee Application windows you may have open, and double-click on MCPR.exe to start the removal tool. Windows Vista users will have to right-click on the file and select "Run as Administrator"

  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

I saved the McAfee cleanup tool to my desktop and when I ran it, my computer locked up about a minute or two after it started, so I had to power down and restart. When it restarted, I clicked on the removal tool on my desktop to run again and I received this messae: CLEANUP FAILED. Cleanup is already running.

Also, the view log button on the message does not work.

Should I continue with the other steps?

I followed your instructions. I ran kapersky (sp?) twice because it found nothing and thus no report. Ad.yieldmanager appears to be gone. After I did everything my Avira mailguard found a virus in a new email I received afterwards and deleted it. My Internet explorer locked up twice after that (once when I hit the link in your email.) I sent the error reports. Computer still seems to start up a little slow and the computer is still not recognizing my power adapter and the battery is not charging, although I can still power up. This may be what is causing the sluggishness? Evidently a lot of dells are having this problem from what I have seen. I have had my computer for 2 years, and this only started happening recently.

Also, when I pull up this topice, IE has a message at the bottom sayin Done, but with errors on page.

Thanks for all of your help, BH

Hi txlegalpro,

Sorry for the delay its been a long day at the office :)

I followed your instructions. I ran kapersky (sp?) twice because it found nothing and thus no report. Ad.yieldmanager appears to be gone.

That’s a good thing :)

After I did everything my Avira mailguard found a virus in a new email I received afterwards and deleted it. My Internet explorer locked up twice after that (once when I hit the link in your email.) I sent the error reports.

Lets have a look at a fresh HijackThis log, just to make sure nothing new is showing up.

Computer still seems to start up a little slow and the computer is still not recognizing my power adapter and the battery is not charging, although I can still power up. This may be what is causing the sluggishness?

Once I give you the all clear you might want to post this problem in the Windows XP™, 2000, 2003, NT forum.

Also, when I pull up this topice, IE has a message at the bottom sayin Done, but with errors on page.

I think that’s related to this site as mine has been showing the same error for a couple days, I will send it up to the administrators :)

No problem, BH. I actually did not expect to hear from you until today, but thanks!

We locked up again this morning and I had to power down. When I booted up I now have Active Desktop Recovery message with a bunch of instructions on my desktop. I cannot copy and past it. It freaked me out at first, but I can still get on line and use my programs. What is that all about?

Here is my hijack log:

Hi txlegalpro,

It doesn’t appear to be a malware problem because your logs are clean, so you might want to post your power adapter problem in Windows XP™, 2000, 2003, NT , just be sure to let them know you got the all clean from the malware forum.

Let’s tidy up your HijackThis log, and your done :)

Fix with HijackThis

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: MUSICMATCH MX Web Player - {d81ca86b-ef63-42af-bee3-4502d9a03c2d} - http://wwws.musicmat...enWebRadio.html (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

===============================================

This is my standard post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise me of any problems you still have. . I know you already have some of these items like antivirus or firewall, but I like to include them anyway incase you ever need them or want to change them.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Posted Image 1.) Watch what you download!
Many freeware programs, and P2P programs like Grokster, Imesh, Kazaa and others are amongst the most notorious, come with an enormous amount of bundled spyware that will eat system resources, slow down your system, clash with other installed software, or just plain crash your browser or even Windows itself. If you insist on using a P2P program, please read This Article written by Mike Healan of Spywareinfo.com fame. It is an updated and comprehensive article that gives in-depth detail about which P2P programs are "safe" to use.

Posted Image 2.) Go to Intenet Explorer > Tools > Windows Update > Product Updates, and install ALL High-Priority Security Updates listed. If you're running Windows XP, that of course includes the Service Pack 2! If you suspect your computer is infected with Malware of any type, we advise you to not install SP2 if you don't already have it. You can post a HijackThis log on our Forums to get free Expert help cleaning your machine. Once you are sure you have a clean system, it is highly recommended to install SP2 to help prevent against future infections.

It's important to always keep current with the latest security fixes from Microsoft.
Install those patches for Internet Explorer, and make sure your installation of Java VM is up-to-date. There are some well known security bugs with Microsoft Java VM which are exploited regularly by browser hijackers.

Posted Image 3.) Open Intenet Explorer and go to Internet Options > Security > Internet, then press "Default Level", then OK. Now press "Custom Level." In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".

Now you will be asked whether you want ActiveX objects to be executed and whether you want software to be installed.
Sites that you know for sure are above suspicion can be moved to the Trusted Zone in Internet Option > Security.

So why is ActiveX so dangerous that you have to increase the security for it?
When your browser runs an activex control, it is running an executable program. It's no different from doubleclicking an exe file on your hard drive.
Would you run just any random file downloaded off a web site without knowing what it is and what it does?

Posted Image 4.) Install Javacool's SpywareBlaster

It will protect you from most spy/foistware in it's database by blocking installation of their ActiveX objects.

Download and install, download the latest updates, and you'll see a list of all spyware programs covered by the program (NOTE: this is NOT spyware found on your computer) Press "Enable All Protection", and you're done.
The spyware that you told Spywareblaster to set the "kill bit" for won't be a hazard to you any longer. Although it won't protect you from every form of spyware known to man, it is a very potent extra layer of protection.
Don't forget to check for updates every week or so.

Posted Image 5.) Let's also not forget that Spybot Search & Destroy has the Immunize feature which works roughly the same way. Another feature within Spybot is the TeaTimer option. This option immediately detects known malicious processes wanting to start and terminates them. TeaTimer also detects when something wants to change some critical registry keys and gives you an option to allow them or not.

Posted Image 6.) Microsoft now offers their own free malicious software blocking tool. Windows Defender improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over fifty (50) ways spyware can enter your PC.

Posted Image 7.) Another excellent program by Javacool we recommend is SpywareGuard.
It provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.

Posted Image 8.) IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. Another good hosts program is mvpshosts. This little program packs a powerful punch as it block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers. For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial.

*It is important to note that all of the above programs/files can be run simultaneously on your system. They will work together in layers, so to speak, to help protect your computer. However, the following suggestions are designed to only run one of each. It is not a good idea to run more than one firewall, and one anti-virus program. Running more than one of these at a time can cause system crashes, high system usage and/or conflicts with each other.*

Posted Image 9.) It is critical that you use a firewall to protect your computer from hackers. We don't recommend the firewall that comes built in to Windows. It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, and the entire firewall is written to the registry. As various kinds of malware hack the Registry in order to disable the Windows firewall, it's far preferable to install one of the excellent third party solutions. Three good ones that are freeware to boot are ZoneAlarm, Kerio and Sygate

Posted Image 10.) An Anti-Virus product is a necessity. There are many excellent programs that you can purchase. However, we choose to advocate the use of free programs whenever possible. Some very good and easy-to-use free A/V programs are AVG, Avast, and AntiVir. It's a good idea to set these to receive automatic updates so you are always as fully protected as possible from the newest virus threats.

NOTE: DO NOT install more than one anti-virus program. They will conflict, and provide less protection, not more.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thanks for letting us help you!

Thx. BH. I will do everything you suggested. IE is locking up like crazy this morning, so hopefully updates will help although I do believe I have automatic Microsoft updates. What about that desktop recovery message on my desktop? Where do I post that problem? Thanks again,

You can post it in the same topic about your power supply, but first lets take a deeper look at your system just to make sure I'm not missing anything that could be caused by

After I did everything my Avira mailguard found a virus in a new email I received afterwards and deleted it. My Internet explorer locked up twice after that (once when I hit the link in your email.) I sent the error reports.

Also let me know if you updated to Internet Explorer v7.00 with in the last two weeks or if you have had it for a while now, because I do know that after installing IE7 some users may experience active desktop or script errors caused by an incompatibility of IE7 and the desktop.htt, but if you have had it for a while that shouldn't be the case.
