So attached is how the background of my computer looks like currently.Attached File  untitled.bmp   244.88KB   188 downloads
I have tried to run Spy Doctor, and Ad-Aware and it detected and cleaned the infections. I changed my desktop background back to a Windows XP theme, and I rebooted my computer but that screen showed up again after the reboot and with each reboot it would take longer and longer for Windows to start up. Also it would sometimes freeze my Firefox and after freezing my McAfee Antivirus would go into disabled mode.
If you cannot see the attachment I can describe my desktop background: (it would look like a windows box that I can minimize, maximize, and close) but it's actually my desktop background.

  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

Let me know if there is anything else that I need to do, once again I would just like to say I appreciate you guys for your help.

Also I had another problem, whenever I try to download anything through Firefox, it would take a long time (about 3 minutes) for the download to start (not that I have slow internet cause I have Fios), and when it does start my antivirus would get turned off. Is there a way to fix this?

Please visit below webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. DO NOT select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix (located in C:\combofix.txt) when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Thank you!

ALSO the time after combofix ran did not change back to my normal time. Right now it's actually using military 24 hours time.
Is there a way to change it back to the way it was before?
Thanks in advance!

About the military time, please refer below..

http://www.pixel2lif...our_to_12_hour/

Now, lets do this..

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Also, tell me.. How is your computer now?

I'd love to follow your step there, but I've ran into a problem.....

Kaspersky Online Scanner license has expired!

After receiving that and clicking ok, it just stops and there's nothing else to do......
Please let me know.

As for how my computer is, it's fine now the background is back to normal.
As for downloading it still turns my antivirus off.

Side note: McAfee doesn't seem to be that great if it can't even stop this spyware/adware that I just got. But then this spyware/adware seems to be quite widespread since I was reading the other posts in the forum.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE:
I will be going to sleep at 12:00am EST and I won't be able to get to this forum until TOMORROW 8/26 at about 8-9pm EST
PLEASE do not assume I am ignoring you, or anything of that sort, but I work so I cannot be at my computer until tomorrow at night.

Thanks for understand

Don't worry about it.. Since you can't run Kaspersky, lets do below..

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Post the log here, and tell me if you still have any computer problem :)

When I get onto the website and install the Active X control, I get an error when it tries to update.
"Error: Update Failed (200)"

So unfortunately I am unable to follow that step as well. :)

Any other steps I can try?

That's weird.. Do you disable your ActiveX configuration?.. Please re-enable them back and then do the ESET Online scan again..

Please refer below website if you do not know how..
http://www.interneti...ex_controls.htm

Or, if that fails, try to look at above picture, just choose Default Level instead of costum..

Then, do the ESET Online scan and post the log here.. If that fails too, then tell me :)

I've checked the settings on ActiveX control and it's fine, and I tried to use it again, and it gave me the same error.
"Error: Update Failed (200)"

SIGH..... :)

Here's something new though......
I got this alert from McAfee.

Your HijackThis log looks clean to me.. Not sure why you can't do online scan but you can always do scan with your McAfee..

Name: A0029106.exe
In Folder: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{DE5F18BC-DBEE-41D6-A453-8FF2335BC6C4}\RP76
Detected As: Generic FakeAlert.a
Detection Type: Trojan
Status: Deleted
Application: C:\WINDOWS\System 32\svchost.exe
Username: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

That indicates System Restore.. Nothing much to worry about.. We'll flush them..

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
Please note that the space between x and / is needed

So that's normal when system restore occurs? But I've never gotten that alert before hmmmmm :)

So yea I had a few questions:
1. My McAfee seems to fail at stopping or at least alert me about spyware/malware, are there any better FREE ones that you recommend?
2. As I stated before in a few replies ago, whenever I download something using firefox, it would lag for a minute, turn my McAfee off before I can download. Then after about 5-10 minutes after the download McAfee would be enabled again. Any particular reason why cause it never happened before?

So my computer is clean, correct? I would like to hear it from you again
But as for how I see my computer so far, everything seems fine.
Once again I would like to say I appreciate all your help and your patience. Have a great day and rest of the week :)

Regards,
whiteout
