How can I test my pc on my labtop monitor

I just bought a second hand computer with no monitor... I wish to plug the labtop as my screen... I have the monitor cable.... and I can connect the two.. but nothing happens... does the labtop need to be configured.. off??? what can I do??

I appreciate any help

Hi pwhelan, and welcome to Geeks to Go!

Unfortunately, a laptop screen can not be used as a monitor for another computer. The monitor connection on the laptop is for sending video to another monitor, not receiving video from a computer. Sorry. :)
