Hello SKousik,

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Hello SKousik,

STEP 1
  • Make sure to use Internet Explorer for this
  • Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "Suspicious files to scan" box on the top of the page:

    • C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\shb.dat
  • Click on the Upload button
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

STEP 2
Please reopen HijackThis and click on Do a system scan only. And put a check next to the following line.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Once you have the check in that line please make sure all open windows are closed (keep HijackThis open) and click Fix checked on HijackThis. A box will open up asking if you want to fix the selected item, please click Yes. After you have fixed that line you can close HijackThis.

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\006703_.tmp

DirLook::
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.SHREYAS\WINDOWS

Sysrst::

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Posted Image

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • The VirScan log
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

IE wouldn't work... It froze up every time I tried to upload the file. I tried it in Firefox, and it worked.

My computer seems to be running fine... Firefox isn't lagging randomly like it has been doing, and everything is going smooth. I think the online scanner picked up some stuff I had in quarantine...

EDIT! Firefox still lags every few minutes. Also, I completely forgot about one weird thing that my computer has been doing for a while... When I boot it up, it goes to an MSDOS looking screen and asks me to press F2 to continue or F1 to go to setup. I have to do this every single time, and it's kind of irritating.

Hello SKousik,
Your logs look clean. :)
Just a few more things to do.

Is that MSDOS window still coming up when you start windows? If it is please post a topic in the XP forum. Tell them the problems you are having and that you have been cleared from the malware forum.

You are using a old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, please update it here.

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    Posted Image

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe
  • Click the CleanUp! button to begin removing tools used to clean your computer
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, please select Yes
Please remove any leftover tools used to clean your computer.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

1. Spywareguard: Is realtime protection from spyware.

2. Spywareblaster: Helps protect against any bad ActiveX from installing on your computer.

3. SuperAntiSpyware: Use this program to remove any spyware that may have gotten on your computer.

4. FireFox: This is a great alternate browser over Internet Explorer. Firefox is much more secure then Internet Explorer and also has a bulilt in pop up blocker.

5. ATF Cleaner: This program cleans out your temporary files. This is a great tool that can help speed your computer up.

6. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

7. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Thank you very much!

The only problem I still see is the startup MSDOS prompt, about which you've told me what to do, and Firefox randomly lagging. Since it's presumably not malware, what do you suppose I should do? Firefox freezes up (no other applications are affected) randomly every few minutes, and sometimes it disappears from the taskbar... Where can I get help for this sort of thing?

Still, thank you very much. I greatly appreciate your help.

Hello SKousik,

Firefox freezes up (no other applications are affected) randomly every few minutes, and sometimes it disappears from the taskbar

Please go into Firefox safe mode and see if it lags then. If not, then one of your add-ons is responsible. To get into Firefox safe mode please click Start>All programs>Mozilla Firefox>Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode).

If you are still having trouble with it after doing the above please uninstall Firefox and then reinstall it and see if that fixes the problem.
