First of all I dont know much about how my laptop runs, but a willing to learn as I am now using it for work.

Of recent times it has been running slow, right now my cpu usage is jumping between 40% and 90%, I am currently downloading an update but even when I am doing nothing and open taks manager the usage is jumping around.

Then I keep getting an error message telling me CTF loader is being closed.

since then I have been getting pop ups even though I have pop up blocker on................mainly from the above
titled webpage.

Yesterday I downloaded windows defender and it found one trojan immediately, then anotherone that was similar during the night, I have removed them both using windows defender.

At this time I am not getting pop ups, however my whole system is still running really slow :) and I dont know if windows defender would have removed all the adware/malware/trojan items.

Nothing was showing up in programs list and I dont know where else to look.

Anyhelp to get my system running at speed again would be gretaly appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read me :)

Argggghhh! :)

I tried to install the windows update service pk 3 but it failed, it keeps asking us to insert the cd rom for the word program, but we dont have one as it was already installed onto or laptop, not to sure how to solve that one either.................windows program still works however it has lost some of its shortcut links and we have to "move" around those lost links to open up a document.............

Oh and I have a net defense log as well, it appears to to keep thinking that we are being attacked, but when I have pinged the IP address, it comes back as our host, I kept the most recent log incase you wanted to look at it.

Thanks a lot

Hello again,

I am looking over your logs now, can you give me a little more information on what you mean here:

windows program still works however it has lost some of its shortcut links and we have to "move" around those lost links to open up a document

sorry its early in the morning and I havent had coffee yet even!!!, I meant word program.

Its the word document program that we are hving problems with.

Try to open a document and it asks us to insert the cd rom, we dont have, click cancel then word opens up and we can then open up the document by finding it through the word program...............does that make sense?

Sorry to lead you astray :)

Hi Kathryn,

Let me ask/answer a few questions, and see what we can come up with.

I tried to install the windows update service pk 3 but it failed

By looking at your HijackThis log it appears you already have SP3 Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)

Of recent times it has been running slow, right now my cpu usage is jumping between 40% and 90%, I am currently downloading an update but even when I am doing nothing and open taks manager the usage is jumping around.

Has this gone away since you ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware ?

If not you can try disabling indexing The Indexing Service in Windows XP Indexes your files to shorten the time needed to search your hard drive, and is known as a resource hog

To disable MS Indexing service...

Click Start....Run.. Type SERVICES.MSC in the Run dialog box, find the Indexing Service in your list, right click it, select Properties, and then in the Startup Type field, select Disabled. Restart the computer and it will stay disabled.

Try to open a document and it asks us to insert the cd rom, we dont have, click cancel then word opens up and we can then open up the document by finding it through the word program...............does that make sense?

Can you attach a screenshot of the error please?

No problem, I will tell you the easiest way that I know of

Download screenshot.exe by AutoIT Team to your desktop.

Right Click on a blank space on your tool bar (red Arrow) to get the following menu.
click Toolbars/ Desktop. (Black Arrow)

Posted Image

You should now see Desktop on your toolbar next to the clock.

Posted Image

Next recreate the error that your getting then

  • By clicking on the arrows next to "Desktop" you should see the desktop contents .
  • With the error your receiving showing on your desktop
  • Scroll or place your pointer on screenshot or screenshot.exe and click once. If you get a security warning, simply click Run.
  • A new JPEG Image will appear on your desktop called screenshot or screenshot.jpg
  • Add that as an attachment to your next post.

Let me know if that works for you :)
