Hello,

My computer has recently acquired an infection. I do not know the type of the infection. There is a virus alert next to the time on the task bar. In my Start Menu, I am missing many files. I can not access my programs from the start menu. I am also missing run, search, my computer and control panel in my start menu. When I access My Computer through the recycling bin, my c and d drives are missing. I keep getting pop ups about virus protectors and alerts. My internet is also very slow. I can only use the internet without ad-ons. If ad-ons are on, I keep being sent to virus protector sites and when I click on sites, it says the page is harmful and cannont continue. I ran a virus scan with AVG and had 13 infections. I cleaned them, but the problem is still there. I also ran a scan with Ad-Aware from Lavasoft and had 118 problems. I fixed them all, and yet the problem still exists. I tried everything I know. Thank you for your help.

Hello and thank you for helping me. Since the last time I described the problem, I downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and ran a full system scan. It seemed to fix all the problems, but I would like to make sure the infection is gone for good. Here is the HijackThis Log:

Glad to hear you have it running better. There are a couple of items that need to be dealt with in HJT.

Run HijackThis. (Vista users, please right click on HijackThis.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4E5558BF-CA10-4DB9-B88C-B5AC2C53C46B} - (no file)
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: xknmtg.dllavgrsstx.dll

Then close all windows except HijackThis and press Fix checked.

Please do a search for the following file:
Start > Search > All Files And Folders
Under More Advanced Options, make sure the following are checked:
*Search system folders
*Search hidden files and folders
*Search subfolders
Then copy and paste the following file in the search box:

xknmtg.dll

If found delete all instances of these files.

I also don't see any anti-virus software installed. Looks like you may have had AVG on here at one time? I would advise getting an AV on here ASAP as it's critical for baseline protection. And with several good free for home/personal use there's no excuse not to.

In the meantime let's get a Kaspersky virus scan to see if anything else is lurking.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

• Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
• It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
• When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
• Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
  • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    Archives
    Mail databases
• Click on My Computer under Scan.
• Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
• You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
• Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
• Please post this log in your next reply.

I did hav AVG at one time. I have Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware. What is the difference between and anti-virus program and an anti-malware program? My computer is running better than it was, but the internet is a little slow. I deleted the objects you told me to delete. I also ran a virus scan and the report is as follows:

Hi,

I did hav AVG at one time. I have Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware. What is the difference between and anti-virus program and an anti-malware program?

The lines are becoming blurred between Spyware and Viruses. In my efforts to explain this I found a good article and provided a link below. Hopefully that will help clear the confusion, but that is an excellent question. One main note here though, is that the free version of MBAM you have does not provide any real time protection, as any of the Anti-Virus programs I recommended would. The goal of the real time protection is to stop the Malware before it can install, which is critical. When we're done here I'll post a good prevention plan that should help keep you from getting re-infected, but an Anti-Virus should be installed ASAP.

• Save it to your desktop.
• Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")

cookies, cache, ect...

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Click the Empty Selected button.

Thank you for answering my question. The information was useful. When I download AVG, is it ok to still have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware? Will the two programs affect each other? When I download AVG, is it ok to still have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware?

Yes, that is fine and is the start of a good protection and prevention plan. Go ahead and install AVG. As I had said earlier, the free copy of MalwareBytes' doesn't run "real-time" so there is no way of having any conflicts. Even if it were that would be fine too.

Let's clean up, then I will advise some other free software that can add to your protection. All are fine to run together, but if you do choose to go with a dedicated firewall over the Windows one then just choose one.

• Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
• Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
• Click on the CleanUp! button
• A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
• If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
• Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
• You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure. In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some free and evalutation versions that provide
better security than the Windows Firewall. Comodo

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Use Zoned Out -
Zoned Out will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the website.

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.
