Hi guys. Basically as the title says my steam won't update. When I try opening steam it says updating steam and gets stuck at either 0 or 1 % and then the task freezes (the memory usage doesn't change in my task manager). I've tried contacting steam but I'm sure you all know how useful they are. I've been running steam on this computer with the same ISP for over a year and never had this problem before and I also hooked up my ethernet cable & wireless on my laptop and it worked on there so I know its not the internet. I have no clue what it could be. I don't have any spyware/firewall/antivirus programs blocking it or anything. It just stopped working out of no where. I tried searching on goolge and did most of the common tips like deleting my clientregistry.blob & uninstalling/reinstalling steam and nothing worked. I even tried copying my updated steam over from my laptop although I figured that wouldn't work haha. It has to be something with my computer but I don't know what it could be. I haven't changed anything on it, no updates or anything. I actually just realized while typing this that I could try system restore, but I'll wait and see if you guys have any ideas thanks.

Hi,

Make sure you turn off any IP filtering software such as Peer Guardian 2.

Try reinstalling steam? (Which means a manual uninstall of steam to make sure everything gets wiped). Or try getting the update via another source.

how would i get it from another source? I tried google :)

I suppose you could try manually removing Steam in case the installer isn't uninstalling it correctly. Check the second part of the linked article. Restart and then install it again from the second link.

Hey I just had the same problem. Searched this topic while trying to fix it when i came across ur problem. It randomly came to me i did something that may have messed it up. I messed around with my internet cause my ethernet didn't work which i also fixed. but anyway. heres what fixed my steam updating...

click where you type in a website and type it "whats my ip" and copy and paste the result as you would a website and it will bring you to your modem home page. i myself have verizon. i clicked on my computer name, clicked enable applications, general, and turn off security. Or to quicken this up just click your firewall. sometimes the least thing can change your firewall. try it. i clicked no security, re-opened steam, and it began to update after i too removed steam, re downloaded it, restarted my computer, but good luck
