hello!

(I tried to be as helpful as i could in the title and the description regarding my problem. :) )

what happened was that i got a message to the similar effect in the topic title so my first thought was its spyware/adware and so i ran Ad Aware which told me i had five infections.
I had prior to this heard and read about smitfraudfix loosly (as a friend of mine had a similar problem once) and i ran that to clear the annoying 'attention admin!' messages away. They went away.

That done i re-did Ad Aware which is still telling me i have 2 infections but wont complete the scan and keeps timing out.

My internet is very slow and my mozilla firefox browser keeps redirecting me to a page to download AVG 2008. So i deleted my temporary interent files and my cookies.

I also have errors when my laptop loads up, like: Intel ® Proset Wireless-error loading plugins, application will exit (this is effecting my internet and so i have to type this from my sisters laptop) and also RUNDLL error loading c:\PROGRAM\~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1bin\MWSBAR.DLL.

Currently i have spyware blaster, Ad Aware 2008 and did have Trend Micro internet security which i downloaded to try and stop any more things coming onto my computer.
Unfortunatly, trend micro doesn;t play well with other software so i tried to remove it but can't get rid of it!

I hope i have given you enough information on what i have done exactly and i hope i have not messed up too much! :)

I have now completed a Hijackthis report which is below! Thank you in advance for your help (and your time).

Hi and welcome to the forums here at G2G! :)

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log

Hi,

Glad to hear it's running better. Let's continue with the fix.

Run HijackThis. Click None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on this:

---------------------------------

O2 - BHO: WebPerform - {AB692F9B-27FE-4511-8885-ED62BB45197B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\webperform.dll (file missing)

---------------------------------

Then close all windows except HijackThis and press Fix checked.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Question, did you install or do you use the MyWebSearch email plug-in or MyBar? If not I would recommend you un-install them using Add or Remove Programs. Although technically not very malcious it is considered malware by some and I would not recommend it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

First, use Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files,
cookies, cache, ect...

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Post a new HijackThis log and let me know how it's running too.
Hi,
In answer to your question I didn't download mywebs or mybar and when I found it I did delete it. Thank you for your suggestion! I think I agree I would not recommend it to anyone either!
I have done as you have asked and the details of each report are listed below. My laptop is running okay so far, nothing unusual as yet but the reports suggest otherwise!
Hi,
There appear to still be traces of mywebssearch things in the system! wacko.gif how can i delete them once and for all?
Yes, there are some traces. First, did you remove it from Add or Remove Programs list in control Panel. You should do that first if not. If you have then we can finish it off manually.
Click Start->Run...
Enter the following commands one at a time into the window and click OK each time.
sc stop MyWebSearchService
sc delete MyWebSearchService
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Run HijackThis. (Vista users, please right click on HijackThis.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these if they are still present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe
O23 - Service: My Web Search Service (MyWebSearchService) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwssvc.exe (file missing)

Then close all windows except HijackThis and press Fix checked.

Hi,

Thanks for the Mywebs Tip! I had removed it using add and remove but it wouldn't go and now I think it has gone! Plus my laptop seems to be loading up much faster.

Here is the OTmoveit2 report: erm, whilst it was finishing up Trend Micro came up with a notification saying that it had quarantined a file called troj.ad something but it wouldn't let me see the rest of the name because it disappeared. I hope thats not too bad? :)

That was probably Trend flagging one of the fix tools like Smitfraudfix as it was being deleted. SF is often flagged as falsely bad. After we finish cleaning up then maybe update and run a full system scan with it. Let's clean up from OTMoveIt:

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Post one last HijackThis log too.

Hi,

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure. In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some free and evalutation versions that provide
better security than the Windows Firewall. Comodo
Outpost Firewall
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some other available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Use Zoned Out -
Zoned Out will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the website.

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.
