Is there a program that can help secure the connection between laptops during a lan party in an event you don't have a router with you?

I know I can use ad hoc to connect our laptops together but I tried it once before. The Vista can connect with the Vista but the XP can't connect properly.

Just wondering if there is a program that can do the job better.

Please help, thanks!
