Hey everyone,
I'm in urgent need of some help. I accidently installed some form of malware onto my computer and it is causing many problems. I have read around the site and I am fairly sure that it is a Zlob, though after trying some of the methods described on the site, I am still having trouble.

All of these pop ups keep appearing about various secruity warnings and so forth (obviously virus related) and it keeps generating some shortcuts on my desktop for various websites.

I did a scan using McAfee secruity centre, as that is what I have on the computer, and even though it showed up with 5 files and I deleted them, the problems keep occuring.

I have a HijackTHis log, and even that has had a few problems running, but I finally got it too work:

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

Hello

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Much of our fix will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

I have come across a problem very early on in the process.

I installed SDfix as you said, but I am unable to get into safe mode. I get to the screen that allows me the choice to go into safe mode or not, and when I select Safe Mode, I see a new screen loading up a bunch of Windows32 files and eventually it just goes black and restarts the computer, which comes up as normal.

How can I get around this?

Okay I may have dug myself into a deeper hole now.

I tried to boot into safe mode using the System Configuration Tool and now I am unable to get into either Safe mode or the normal mode. The computer just continues booting over and over again. I tried loading up normal mode by pressing F8 but that didn't work.

Is there a way I can stop this continual boot so I can run Combofix?

Ugh, gonna have to send you to the Windows XP forum to fix that

Tell them you still have malware, but you need that issue fixed first. Then come back here when you can get into either mode

Did you try boot into Safe Mode via MSConfig ? If so, tell them that as it will help

Okay, I managed to get my computer running again and got into safe mode.
SDfix failed to work as the command box fails to stay open long enough for me to writing any prompts inside it.
However, I managed to use ComboFix, so I have the log from that.

I assume there are further steps to take to remove the malware, as it is still active in Windows standard mode.

Thanks again for all of this help, it is very much appreciated!

Edit: Since posting this I have tried using the SmitfraudFix.exe method described in another thread, which still hasn't removed the malware.
