Set up cannot copy atapi.sys file

I have been trying to update windows xp to the service pack 3 and I keep getting this message. Setup cannot copy the file atapi.sys. I have been told Daemon tools can cause this. I have uninstalled it except for a few minor files that have little bearing on the program itself. Does anyone have any other suggestions why these updates won't install. I can't install the security updates to Word , Excel either.
