I have been suffering from this killer virus/malware for a week now. At first I got a desktop with a background saying "my computer is infected, please install spyware". It also removed some tabs from the desktop properties windows so that one cannot go and reset the desktop background. I had McAfee and it didn't help. I tried going to many antivirus websites for an online scan, but this malware totally prevents going to any such sites. Searching on the internet for solutions wouldn't work because links from any search sites would just show an unrelated website. This happens both from IE and firefox.

I tried everything in my capacity to get rid of this thing. I downloaded trend housecall and spybot sd to another machine, wrote to cd and installed on the infected machine. So far I was able to get rid of the desktop background and some other symptoms. But still no luck with the browser hijack. I am attaching the hijackthis.log - any help would be really really apreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Finally I got it resolved. I used Malwarebytes and that helped. I tried almost every other tool in the world - many of them claim to be malware removers; but they themself are malwares!! Please be aware of that fact when you download and use any such utilities.
