I've been trying to install the Catalyst 8.8 drivers on Vista-64 Ulti all night now. Every time I do, it gives me "No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning" on reboot after installing the driver + CCC. Device manager claims "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)", and driver version 8.522.0.0 (which I think is the 8.8 driver, so it seems installed...?).
I've tried it about six or seven different ways, using a registry cleaner and driver cleaner pro, not using them, restarting x amount of times before installing the new drivers, re-downloading the drivers, installing CCC and the driver separately (the driver wouldn't install right). I finally just used system restore (I've never even used this feature in an operating system before - it's kind of cool, actually. Less work!) to roll back to the 8.7 drivers.
I've scoured the internet, and it seems absolutely no one is having this problem, and definitely not with one of the new 48xx cards (there are scattered reports of similar errors from previous catalyst versions and much much older hardware, and most seem to be simple user error such as installing over the older driver without removing it). I'm pretty confused (and annoyed!).
So yeah, if anyone's got any ideas on what I could try next, that would be awesome. I don't particularly want to re-install vista over this, but I might just try that this weekend if I can't get it fixed by then. Bleh.
My system (off a signature on another forum, so sorry for the weird formatting):
Asus P5Q3 Dlx || Q9450 @ 3.2GHz || OCZ DDR3 ReaperX 2x2Gb 1333 6-5-5-20
2x Sapphire HD4850 CrossfireX || WD VelociRaptor 300GB || Antec Quattro 1kW PSU
Running Vista x64 Ultimate.
Thanks if you can help : ).
