i dont know why i just didnt post a thread when the virus first occured (you guys are amazing) but i decided to call a friend instead...

ok. so let me start by saying i dont download anything (not even music) into my pc.
however i was browsing the internet and a program installed itself on my computer (im told this is a "hijack agent")
it was the Antivirus XP 2008. i called my friend-- got a tutorial online from microsoft on which files to delete from my computer n how to adjust my registry and i thought i successfully removed the thing, maybe TOO successfully because i may have deleted important files....

-my normally lightning fast computer is now freezing and going mighy slow. (im on my laptop right now)
-everytime i search something on yahoo n click on a results link- i get redirected to some ad site.
-when i type in an internet address, i usually see "page cannot be displayed"
-some of my desktop items dont open when i click on them
worst of all- i cannot find my Windows xp cd anywhere!!!! i think it may have just been on the computer when i ordered it bc i keep everything. :)

please save the day again computer heros!

Hello, and welcome to Geeks To Go.
I suggest you go to the Malware Forum and run all the steps located HERE. These self-help tools will help you clean up 70% of problems on your own. If you are still having problems after doing the steps, then please post a HiJackThis Log in THAT forum. If you are unable to run and/or post a HJT log, then post that in your initial post in the topic you create in that forum.

If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).
