Please help! I have been reading advice on your website about this and tried a few things to clear up this Trojan Spy myself. Here is the latest log from the Ad-Ware scan. It appears I may have gotten rid of 2 of the 3 "critical" issues that were found but I still get the unwanted popups. The desktop is back to black and the message gone but I know the spy is still there.
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
Hope I did this correct!

Hello, crlyn3 Welcome to the forum try this please!!!

Please follow the steps listed below.

Make sure you are using the latest update for your definitions file.

A. It is suggested that you clean the following directory contents (but not the directory folder).

Please disconnect from the internet (for broadband/cable users, it is recommended that you disconnect the cable connection) and close all open browsers.

1. C:\Windows\Temp\
2. C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <=this will delete all your cached internet content including cookies.
3. C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
4. C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
5. C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
6. Empty your " Recycle Bin ".

B. Boot into Safe mode. Click here

C. Please run Ad-Aware SE just a bit differently, using the command line below that corresponds to your version of Ad-Aware SE:
Click "Start" > select "Run" > type the text shown in bold below (including the quotation marks and with the same spacing as shown)

"C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Professional\Ad-Aware.exe" +procnuke
"C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Plus\Ad-Aware.exe" +procnuke
"C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal\Ad-Aware.exe" +procnuke

Click OK.
Note: The path above (between the quotes) is the default location of Ad-Aware SE, if this has been changed,
Please adjust it to the location that you have installed it to.

1. Click on the gear to access the Configuration Menu. Click on Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion" > Proceed.
2. Perform a “Full system scan.”
3. When the scan has completed, select Next.
4. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
5. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
6. Click next, Click OK.

Please shutdown/restart, reconnect to the internet, and post a new full system logfile as a reply.

Your log seems to be clean. Are you still having problems? Here are some online virus scan programs I recomend that you use to make sure your computer is clear of viruses as well as spy/adware.

Panda

Symantec

Mcafee

TrendMicro

F-secure

Once you are done with at least two, please, post the results here.

Here is one scan - I knew this thing wasn't gone and I have had a lot of trouble getting online. Had to re-install the software. The last two times I tried to post something here it closes AOL and I lose the scan log.

Hi crlyn3.
Your Ad-aware log is still showing signs of the smitfraud infection, I need you to do the following please,

Please go Here and unzip the newest version of HJT into a new dedicated folder,
Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it hjt. Unzip HijackThis into this folder. Launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log
This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.
Most things are harmless and needed so don't make any changes.
post a log here please.

We will get this for you !

Thank you so much! I can't believe this thing is so difficult to get rid of. One question though, can it be spread by e-mail and attachments like a photo?

OK crlyn3,
I need you to put HJT into a new folder for me please, It is important you do this prior to anything else

Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT
Now please move HJT into this new folder and run it from there please,

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please right-click: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download smitfraud reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

I need you to copy all of the Killbox file paths below and paste them into Notepad.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\bsw.exe
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmon.exe
C:\Windows\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following, if found, (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

While still in Safe Mode, do the following:

Make sure all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis and place a check next to the following items, if found, then click FIX CHECKED

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe

Don77,
Here are the 2 scan logs fro both HJT and Activescan. There is a problem with the Killbox website and it isn't available right now. I did have it on my computer already so I had to make due with that.
Thanks,
Crlyn3

Hi Don77,
Here is the latest HJT scan. I couldn't find the spyware vanisher program to delete it. It appears that while it was downloaded into the computer it was either never installed or already uninstalled. I think I got rid of all the files/folders on this. Thank you for your quick response. This computer is running much faster now.

And finally,

Nice job your log is clean !
How is it running ?
Please use the following suggestion to help prevent reinfection

Download the following program, For keeping crap off your system to begin with
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests. Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Download Spyware Blaster

Keep AD-Aware. and Spybot 1.3 handy, Check them for updates prior to running and run them weekly
Same with your Anti Virus,

For an added check run an online virus scan, you can use one of the 2 below,
TrendMicro's HouseCall
ActiveScan

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program
Download and install Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

Remeber to Check Windows for updates

Probably a good time to create a new restore point See Here Name it clean or something like that,

Don77,
Thanks so much for all your help. My computer still has some issues but I'm sure it is my own fault. Probably deleted some things I shouldn't have before I found help. You guys are all great! My computer runs much faster now.
